DD is getting ready to start kindergarten in August (I can hardly stand it..she is already a school girl *weep weep*) We have not received the booklet that informs you of what the necessary supplies are to start and I do NOT want to wait until that time because then everybody will be crazy in the stores and there will be nothing left. So, those of you who have been there, what are the supplies that I can start getting now? This is 1/2 day kindergarten class.
Here is what I have already purchased:
Backpack
Lunch box
Cool pack
Things I assume she will need:
Elmers glue or glue stick
Pencil & sharpener
Crayons
Scissors
Ruler
Paper (what kind?)
Any other tips would be great!!

Here's what they have on the kindergarten list at the school I will be teaching at next year, but it could be different at your child's school (for example, at my previous school, the teachers didn't want Elmer's glue, they wanted only glue sticks. And they would never have allowed markers in the classroom, only crayons, so who knows what the kindergarten team at your school will want):
· scotch tape
· Colored markers
· Kleenex : 2 boxes
· Pink pearl erasers
· Copy paper- 1 ream
· #2 Ticonderoga pencils : ongoing supply
· Elmer's glue
· Pencil sharpener: hand held
· Expo pens (
for student white boards)
·
Hand sanitizer
ETA: at some schools they want 2-pocket homework folders.

On our list last year they had clorox wipes, lysol and hand sanitizer.

Thank you! Sanitizer and kleenex are so important, especially with the things that are going around in our town right now. They have terrible cases of bacterial meningitis in our high schools and they are worried that younger siblings of those high school students are going to bring it into the elementary schools. Great tips!!!!

It will really vary by school and socio-economic status of the neighborhood and the state laws as well.
In Arizona, by state law if it's required for normal school work, the school has to provide it. They can't demand anything, but they can ask nicely for donations of things. And what you send in is NOT usually for your own child, it's for all the children in the classroom to share.
I usually buy what I think the teacher can use, even if it's not specifically on our list. we only get our list on back to school night or the first day of school, so there isn't much shopping time by then.
Each kid usually needs for class:
*several 2-pocket folders (with or without the prongs different teachers want different ones and we have been asked for certain COLORS before. )
*2 or 3 compositions books (the ones with the paper sewed in. they use those for their daily writing in class.)
MY kids usually have a pencil box for their own use a small # of these items with backups in a pencil box at home for homework use:
*pencils (the fancy patterned ones are coated in plastic and hard for young kids to sharpen)
*white board pens (most have small whiteboards in their desk)
*crayons (18-24 count crayola)
*big pink eraser
*hand held pencil sharpener (with a place to catch shavings)
*box of washable markers (usually crayola)
*small colored pencils(8-16 count)
*small kid sized scissors (try to get a name brand, blunt point usually req for school)
I usually pick some up some paper or 1 subject notebooks for homework.
For teachers I send the above for students that don't have supplies.
For the classroom I buy:
*kleenex (they go thru on average 1 box a week)
*I don't usually send hand sanitizer (some teachers have started using it exclusively, and NOT washing hands in the sink before lunch :puke)
*clorox type wipes for desks (our custodians don't wipe desks)
*ziploc bags are often requested for tons of activities
*sometimes teachers request disposable cameras for class trips
* paper plates, cups, napkins, disposable forks for those things that are NOT class parties but involve food (like birthdays)
There is probably more I'm not thinking of. some stores have started stocking back to school supplies, but then again, we go back to school August 4th!
--I buy extra of anything artsy (crayons, markers, colored pencils, erasers +) for the art teacher
my kids always want fresh markers and if they don't use em at school they use them at home. I buy extras to donate to the art teacher too.

I taught Pre-K and always asked for baby wipes and kleenex (we didn't have an official list that went home). Hand sanitizer is totally inappropriate for Kindergarteners IMHO. They need to learn to wash hands regularly and the teacher should absolutely be teaching that...I would actually ask what the hand sanitizer was for before sending it (but I'll be that obnoxious mom). An emergency here and there I can understand but 22 bottles of hand sanitizer seems excessive!

WOW!
In our town the only things my dd had to bring was herself and since we didn't sign up for lunches at school a lunch box with food in it and something to drink.
The teacher did ask for donations here and there but nothing was required.
