View Full Version : When did you dd start shaving?

DD1 is 11, she has had one period (in May), not consistent yet by any means. She is dealing with acne (yippee-skippee) and now I have noticed that her dark hair is really showing now on her legs.
I don't know when I should start her shaving.
I'm not comfortable giving her a razor to shave with. I have considered the Neet stuff. I just need to know do I start now or do I wait and if I wait, when will I know it is the right time?
TIA

ask her. I told my 11yr old to let me know when she was ready. her leg hair is very sparse and light still and IMO she doesn't need to start shaving, but I'm fine with it whenever she wants to start.
we'll start either with nair/veet or I'll get her an electric razor to reduce chances for nicks and cuts.

I would leave it up to her. My DD is 14 and doesn't shave.

I would leave it up to her. Mine started shaving when she was eight, she is ten now. She was intially sneaking it and when I was having a cheap phase in buying razors she started getting knicks and that when I figured it out. I get the triple blade with protective wires for her and she has yet to cut herself. I've thought about doing Neet or something similar
but she hates the smell.

Mine started begging around age 10. She started shaving at age 11.

I started when I was 11. My mother told me I either had to shave or not wear shorts/sleeveless tops that summer. Even in the dark ages I didn't do any major damage with a razor.

I would let her decide when or if she wants to shave. If you think she might be afraid to approach you, you can approach her and let her know that it's her decision.
My sisters shaved my legs when I was 3 years old (yes, you read that right). By 8, I was shaving pretty regularly because my hair was dark (I don't think it would have been dark had they not shaved my legs when they did). By 10, I wouldn't leave home with shorts, a skirt, or a dress if I had not shaved my legs.
I did do some damage with a razor a couple of time. I have really bony shins, though. I think the new razors are pretty safe, though, and I don't have a problem with them. However, I would recommend using some sort of shaving cream or body wash instead of just plain soap. I use California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Body Wash because I can't stand the smell of anything else.

I was 14 when I started shaving. My hair is white blonde on my legs though. I started when a friend teased me about my leg hair - since it did show up a lot in the sunlight.
I'd just tell your daughter she can start shaving when she wants.

I started shaving when I was 11 or 12 I don't remember which. All i remember is that my leg hairs were way to long for me to be comfy. I used to get picked on a lot at school and didn't want to add on long leg hairs to the rest of my problems.

This. My 9 year old hasn't asked and I'm not going to bring it up. She's not in school and shaving isn't common in our circles of friends so maybe (hopefully) it won't be something she wants to do any time soon.

I waited till my girls asked. DD1 asked before she started 5th grade and dd2 just asked this summer. I dont let them use a razor though we use the nair or veet. DD1 asked to have her eyebrows waxed this past yr. and I took her and they just shaped them nicely not too much taken off. DD2 is now asking for this too and her eyebrows are thicker than dd1 so we shall see. Girls are so much fun.

Leave it up to her.
My dd was 10, closer to 11. I gave her a razor right off the bat.

My 8 1/2 yr old has underarm hair. I am hoping that she doesnt have to start shaving until next summer. She will need to start wearing deodorant soon (right now, as long as she bathes daily she's ok), and she will be wearing a training bra by this fall. She is starting to wash her face with Mary Kay Velocity skincare because she is starting to break out some.
8 and a half, and third grade. I wish I had some cameraderie around here, but dd's friends are probably years away from her hormonally.
For legs, it will depend on when she is comfortable. I remember being made fun of at school at the end of 6th grade because of my thick, darkening leg hair, so I started shaving then.

I started shaving around 12 or so. I use a regular razor... occasionally, I would nick myself around the ankles.
Personally, I wouldn't let a child that young put neet or veet on themselves. I think that stuff is weird. But, we are pretty particular about chemicals in this house. I would opt for an electric razor over chemicals.

I started at 9 but did it in secret till I hit full blow puberty at 10. My mother kept wanting me to push it off saying "your hair will stay fine and light if you dont shave" which is a load of bull, I have dark brown hair and pale pasty cracker white skin, every single hair came in dark and course.
honestly if I ever have a dd I will teach her how as soon as she asks. be it even 8 or 9, because I dont want her going around feeling down and crappy because she is getting teased about her leg/underarm hair.

I started shaving in 8th grade I think. I started w/ an electric razor.
I'd leave it up to her.

5th or 6th grade. I don't remember. I remember my first time though. My mom helped me. Hmmmm, I think it must have been the summer in between the grades actually come to think of it.

I was in the 6th grade. I had dark hair and quite a bit of it.

I told oldest dd 13. I think she was 15 before she bothered.

I was probably 11 or 12. 6th grade, I think. I am not a hairy person (Natural blonde, pale skin, little body hair) but I was incredibly vain.
I don't think my 9.5 yr old daughter will make it to 12 before she's shaving her legs and underarms. She's showing signs of puberty already and she's dark haired. When she is uncomfortable with her body hair, I'll teach her how to shave/wax/whatever. I'm guessing 6th grade but that's just a guess.

Lisa was about 11 and Becca was about 13 (if Lisa didn't giver her a hard time she probably still wouldn't be shaving). I didn't tell them to start they just grabbed a razor and did it.

I think my dd was around 10 or 11 when she started shaving with veet. She doesn't shave on a regular basis. It's usually just when another kid says that she has hairy legs. She's 12 now.

Great info ladies. I can relax then, she doesn't ask about it and she is totally comfortable with her body. She doesn't even get bent out of shape about her pimples/blackheads--just a fact of life for the stage she is in. Really easy going girl. I'll just ride it out and see how it plays in the future.
Thanks for your input. I knew I would get good advice here! :)
