View Full Version : Rear Facing Until When ?

DD is 18 months and 90 % for height. I'm debating when to turn her forward facing. She seems comfortable, and is used to rear facing, but I'm just wondering if there is a new "recommended" time to turn them or a height/fit issue ? She's really light weight so she does not exceed the rear facing limits on her seat yet.

Advice ? Opinions ? Thanks.

I would keep her rear facing until she reaches the limit on the seat to rear face. She is happy that way so I would leave her be.

Over a year and over 22lbs. Has to be both. Keep it rear as long as possible.

Until they can take the seat out and turn it around themselves.

The rear limit is 33 #, she is just above 21 # right now, that could be years away. I'm guessing the height / knees up to her chest factor will kick in first.

Wow, I never really stopped to consider how light she is relative to the "standards" for seats.

A child has outgrown a rear-facing seat by height when there is less than 1" of hard shell above the top of her or his head (most seats -- check the manual). Long legs do not interfere with riding rear-facing safely.

She's in a marathon, so she's good to go for quite a while. Thanks so much.

DD Is 14 months and 20.8 lbs. She is in a rear faceing car seat ( Omega) until she reaches 33 lbs.

I rear faced Owen until he was at the limit of the carseat, I think that was around 15 months.

Yep. If your car seat has a good limit and she's happy, leave her be.

As long as possible she should remain rear facing. Many seats have higher rf weight limits now.

That is not a reason to turn her. Leaving her until 33 lbs or she outgrows the seat backs height is the reason to turn.

Bent knees is not a reason to turn around the seat.

My DS was turned around at the seat's limit of 33lbs, though he was only 16 months then and about 35".

DD turned 2 in March but is still rear facing, since she's only 25lbs, though 36in. I may turn her around at 3 years if the baby I'm pg with sticks, because it's difficult to have two rear facing seats in our car due to DH's height. (DH is too tall to have a rear facing seat behind him in the car).

*My tall torso DS was far from outgrowing the Marathon rear-facing. However, he did outgrow it in length forward facing right before he turned 3. It would be pretty difficult to outgrow the marathon in length rear-facing.

DS is 13 months and 95th for height and is still rear facing. He will continue to rear face until he hits the limit of his seat, 35lbs.

dh is 18 months, but got turned forward at 14 or so when his weight limit for the rear facing was up(only 22 pounds for that seat) and he was also uncomfortable and fussing because his legs were being pushed into his face by the seat.
