My SIL had her DD on June 25th, is breastfeeding on a dairy free diet. I nursed a year completely dairy free, so i have given her all my meal ideas. However I am one of those people that can eat the same thing pretty much everyday.

Anyone have any good meal suggestions, yummy snacks that I can recommend to her?

You can find a lot of dairy free stuff at health food stores like Whole Foods Market.
Dairy really bothers me so I am use to eating dairy free. I really do not like soy so I avoid that sometimes too.

The best thing I have ever found is rice milk. I use it for everything, on my cereal, when I bake (this includes everything making scrabbled eggs, muffins, cakes etc...just substitute milk with rice milk). You can also find cheeses and ice creams make from rice milk. Here's the website (http://www.tastethedream.com/products/index.php) to the products that I buy.
I use the cheeses to make pizza and casadillas. You can use the ice cream to make shakes or smoothies. It's really a great alternative.

I've done soy and dairy free. I'm happy to give ideas, but it's a lot easier with a bit more specific request. Do you want sweet, salty, gooey? What flavors? Any particular craving? I do a lot of crock pot cooking and basic stuff...I'm no Food Network Star! The only thing I really missed out on being soy and dairy free is butter and cheese. I also never really wanted to go to the trouble of substituting for "cream of" soups. Other than that it was pretty easy to cook...dining out, well, that's a whole nother story.

any in the freezer), fruit

Snacks: Graham crackers, Choc. Chip Teddy Grahams, nuts, dried fruit,
fruit snacks/ fruit roll ups/ streamers, popsicles, Kitty Cat cookies from

vitamins as an infant, too bad he doesn't like avocado anymore!

Snack -
Dried apple, figs, apricots, raisins, dates,
Cheerios, crackers (My Family Farm animal friends), pretzels, etc.
read the ingredients!
Bread or pita (read the ingredients!)

to a birthday party and small portion size is perfect!

Lunch -

Dinner
- Trader Joe's Southwest style turkey burgers
- corn on the cob or steamed
- chicken drumsticks with homemade BBQ sauce (ketchup, rice vinegar,
onion powder, molasses), bake at 325 for 30-45 minutes
- Pork chops seared in olive oil then simmered in chicken broth,
served with applesauce
- Pork loin baked at 325 for 20-30 minutes, served with mango chutney
(who knew? He fights me for it!)
- Pasta with a little tomato sauce where I can try to hide some
steamed broccoli or chopped up meatballs made from ground pork and
lamb [tonight's discovery was using leftover turkey meatloaf]
- Plain pasta with lots of olive oil
- Turkey meatloaf (1 lb ground turkey [Empire Kosher seems OK, even
though it has natural flavors, I prefer the mixed over the white
meat], 1 1/2 cups stuffing mix (read the label!), 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
(we make our own, above), 1 egg, 1 onion sauteed, mix together, bake
350 degrees 45 minutes. I've been chopping broccoli into it lately,
very successful! Another variation I've done is with tomato sauce
instead of the BBQ sauce, with some Italian herbs, served with sauce
at the table even my husband likes it. He can broil some shredded
cheese on top of his!
- Roasted chicken from the supmkt, again, check the ingredients
- Turkey stew - cooked dark turkey meat, dried apricots, chicken
broth, rice, chop ingredients and simmer 10 minutes, then puree or
serve as is. Also turkey with broth, rice and grapes worked for a bit too.
- For James Frozen Latkes/Potato pancakes from Trader Joes were too
oniony, and Ians allergen free chicken and fish sticks were too
crunchy, but they might work for you!
- Pumpkin Stew in a Pot from a book by Lizzie Vann - bake winter
squash or pumpkin until soft. Cut up and saute 2 apples, 1 onion, 1
lb ground turkey or pork, until brown. Add chicken broth to cover and
1/3 c. raisins, simmer 20 minutes. Add squash and bring back to a
boil, then bake in oven 350 for 20 minutes. Freezes beautifully and
defrosts on the stove like a dream, just add some more chicken broth!

Whitness-Yes I discovered rice milk when I was dairy free and it was awesome to cook with!! Thanks for the site...I'll send that on to SIL.

Tift-
Oh I dont know exactly. My MIL is trying to cook for my SIL and I was just trying to think of different things she could cook or just have on hand for SIL to snack on. I wasnt very creative in my foods-just stuck with what I knew I liked.

mhofener
One thing that helped me was to go thru cookbooks and find stuff I could make or could "tweak" with ricemilk and make.
There are lists of safe foods at restaurants.....but I dont have it saved on my computer or remember where I got it. You can google it and try to find stuff. I know some Subway breads are safe, for example.
I was "bad" and cheated on majoy holidays. It was kinda my own way to keep my sanity and not feel depressed-its crazy that *food* can make some people feel that way!!! But I do live in the South and cheesy comfort foods are what most people eat/cook/have at family gatherings, unfortunately.
Anyway when I would "cheat", My DS would spit up a little and get gassy and I would remember why I was doing it. Then I ate dairy on Easter, right when DS turned one and *nothing* happened. Woo-Hoo-Bring on the Pizza!! Anyway, point is-you get used to it, its an easy way to lose weight;) , and your kiddo thanks you for it. So Good Job Momma!!!!
