I had to go to Austin yesterday and sit in on a legislative public hearing for the government reform committee. Durring this session they were looking for ways of trimming the fat and wanting to stop professional licensure requirements for professions they view as not important to the public health safety and welfare. My profession was being attacked. This is a whole 'notha story about how the general population just doesn't get what a landscape architect does.

Anyway, the real reason I am posting. Lactation Consultant was mentioned and all 6 men on the board smirked and giggled and saw no need to discuss whether lactation consultants should be licensed and they moved on. I was horrified but had my hands tied. I was there to represent my profession that already had a bad rap and felt like it would hurt my case to have taken them on in regards to lactation consultants.

I am however, thinking about turning this information over to la leche and the handful of lactation consultants I know with the names and addresses of the men sitting in that room. Hopefully, they will get some letters that enlighten them.

I'm not sure I understand what happened there. What were they going to discuss? Licensing? And then what no one thought it was important? Politics are really getting me down lately. You should totally contact your local LLL leader and let them know the whole story. I could post it in the Denton LLL yahoo list if you want to PM me some details or post more here.

And it's a bummer you have to defend your job. You design playgrounds for children don't you? I know if anyone asked me I'd sure say that's pretty darned important! No one asks me...

I completely agree about contacting the LC's you know and LLL so that letters can be sent. Really the only way people learn is if others educate them. How said is that!!

I'm sorry you had to put up with defending your job and their poor uneducated attitudes.

Yes do this! Too bad you couldn't (or felt you shouldn't) say anything then. They probably would have been caught off gaurd, not realizing your expertise in both areas. ;)

Holy cow. Reading that made my blood boil, and I'm guess you had the same visceral response.

That definitely needs following up on...

Someone should send them an illistration they could relate to when they get their letters. Something like:

If you had ED would you want some Joe Shmow that said they knew how to treat you working around down there? Or would you yant someone that was actually licensed to take care of you?
