my almost 7 week old now weighs in at 11lbs 13 oz. He feed every 2 hours sometimes 3. he like to eat for up to a hour or more. he weighed 6lbs 12 oz at birth. Dr tells me to give him water. he thinks my baby needs a diet. What do you all think.
This is the same old school dr. that made me stop bf and switch to formula for a week just because he had jaundice.
I am getting a new dr aug 1st but is my baby too big? I thought we were supposed to feed them as much and whenever they want but dr says its like giving someone a steak the 1st ones good 2nds good and so on and they will jsut keep eating.
oops gotta go the beast is waking and hes hungry

hi- you cant overfeed a breastfed baby!!!! Dont worry my dd is on the large side too- but she is happy, healthy and content. As long as he is primarily feeding at the breast you are good. Babies can overeat at the bottle because of a faster flow. Just keep feeding you rbaby whenever he wants for as long as he wants. I always thought water is not recommended until at the minimum 6 months if that- giving it can mess with supply. Keep feeding that baby!!!! Good for you for finding a new doc

My kids were both about 14 pounds at 2 months and 19 pounds at 4 months. 100% breastfed.
They are both very thin now, and very healthy.

yeah i agree you can't overfeed and i wouldn't give water just yet. i was told i could at 5 months but he was only interested in drinking from my cup.....i think it had to do more with the fun of a cup.
sounds like he's perfect!

Don't listen to that dr..... You cannot overfeed a bf baby. Your baby is getting all that he needs, unlike bottle feeding, bf babies have to work to get the milk out so you cannot overfeed.
Ds was 14 lbs at two months and 8 lbs at birth. He continued to gain weight until his 9 month check up and has stayed the same weight through the last three months.

if you baby is overweight then mine is obese. lol! ds2 weighed 17lbs 4oz at his 2 month check up. doc thought it was great that he got that big on just my milk. he told me to keep doing what i was doing, which is breastfeeding. don't worry about that stupid doc. you baby is fine. they always seem to thin out once they start getting mobile.

Do not give your baby water. Breastfeed on demand, and youre baby will be his own perfect size. No, he is not too big. Mine was 11 pounds at 3 weeks.

I heard that there was a study done and giving water to a baby under 6 months of age can have a chemical affect to them making them kinda "drunk". This was on the radio so I don't have any resources to check for that one.
My DS was 11 lbs + when he was one month old but he was an 8 lb 6 oz baby at birth too. At his 3 month check up he was 14 lbs. I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh gosh, someone needs to retire lol.
You cannot overfeed a bf baby. If a mom has oversupply she might have a bigger baby just because the milk flows so fast but these babies tend to eat very short time because they quickly fill up. Or if someone bottle feeds bm a lot. Bottle feeding, no matter whether it's breastmilk or artificial baby milk, can cause overfeeding because of the constant drip of the bottle and a baby's reflex to swallow when foods comes his/her way.
Water at this age can be dangerous because it can contain contaminants, even if you use filtered water. Ugh, what bad advice. Good for you that you question that.
This might further help you to calm down on this matter:

How can I say this nicely?
That doctor is an idiot.
There - I at least avoided profanity.
Enjoy your chunk - when they start crawling, it all starts to thin out. Pinch those thighs while you can!

When dd was 8 weeks old she weighed 11 lbs 15oz. At 8 months she weighs just over 20 pounds and is very healthy. Her pediatrician has never told me that she is fat or big.

Please don't listen to that doctor!
Giving water to a wee one can be very dangerous.
Your breastmilk is just perfect for your lo.
And no, your baby is just perfect.
My babies all gained weight very quickly and now are slim and trim.

5 pounds in 7 weeks! all I have to say is WOW that's amazing momma you're doing an excellent job!
I gave my first child water once, he aspirated, choked, turned blue and went limp. I had to call 911 and if my mother was not a nurse that recussitated him even before the ambulance came he would have died. After that I never gave any of my babies water. It's very risky to give them water because its thin and delivered to them too quickly at such a young age.
This probably does not happen too often, but it happened to me because I didn't know how to give him water very well. Anyway, don't give him water, he isn't too fat he's perfect.

Thanks for all the replies and encouragement. I knew that dr was a idiot. He graduated 40 years ago and has been giving me crap ass advice since day one esp regarding jaundice. I cant wait till aug when my lil guy gets his new dr.
