View Full Version : My cousin's husband (I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry)

My cousin's husband (I'll call him M) has had issues for as long as I've known him. He was diagnosed as bipolar at one time, but he is unmedicated. He recently got social security disability, but I believe it was due to a his back condition rather than his mental condition (but perhaps it was both).
Anyway, M has gotten to a point where he absolutely will not kill any living thing--insects, spiders, mammals, nothing. Well, now, not only is he refusing to kill the rats (or mice--my cousin said rats, but I think they're mice), but he is feeding them.
On the back of their house, they were originally going to have a huge porch, but while it was being built, they decided to enclose it and make it a part of the house. Well, that's where M is feeding the rats. He closes the door between that area and the rest of the house and feeds them dog food and such. Even after the rats chewed through the wall and ruined my cousin's dishwasher, he refused to quit feeding them.
In his latest endeavor with the rats, he decided to give them beer. Yes, beer. He offered no explanation for why he did that.

oh hell no. I would not have mice OR rats in my house! Under any circumstances, I would be calling the exterminator. Dh would have to get rid of the rats or i'd be leaving. And wth? with the beer? that's alcohol and rat abuse. Now I picture little drunk rats running all over the place. Funny, but gives me the heebie jeebies....Blech!

I don't find it funny. :(
They are going to have serious infestation if he continues.
The chewing through the wall part makes me think they're rats as opposed to mice. Either way, it's not good.

definitley not funny, especially if they have children, rodents carry diseases.

Ok you bring up a good point about their overall safety
but the initial reaction before reality sets in is laughter IMO

Funmommy, I agree. While I find the overall situation to be very sad, I couldn't help but to laugh my ass off at the rats with the beer situation. Even my cousin, who is at wits' end with it all, was laughing about it as she told me.

I guess it just goes to show you that he obviously has a good heart
but someone needs to tell him it's gone a little toooo far. LOL
I'm sorry about your cousin having to deal with this. I don't even know
what to suggest except some counseling of some sort :o
All I can think about is all those mice I fed in my house as a kid that
my parents didn't know about. LOL
I still like mice but only in a tank LOL

Our dog likes beer.
and I would put out some DCon when he wasn't looking and go to petsmart and buy him a hamster to divert his attention.

He definitely has a good heart; I think that's why my cousin has stayed with him. Unfortunately, though, he doesn't have common sense or a sane mind to go with that good heart.
They now have 16 dogs. They already had four, and then someone dumped a pregnant 3-legged dog out on my aunt (my aunt lives right in front of my cousin and M). M took the dog home with him, and a couple of days later, she had 11 puppies (I'm almost sure that's the correct number). All lived, and he kept them all. The other four dogs are indoor dogs, but M built a pen for the 3-legged mama and her puppies. He eventually had to build multiple pens to separate the now grown dogs.

I'm going to suggest this to my cousin. I don't know that she'll do it, but I bet her sister, who lives nearby, will. They'll have to be careful because of her dogs, though.

yeah, i think a couple of hamsters or a guinea pig or something is a good idea. he can still have a soft heart for rodents and not infest their home with wild animals.

Oh, Judy! You should write a novel!! Heh, I bet if we combined relative stories and published them (changing the names to protect the innocent, of course) we could make millions. Want to get together and collaborate on a best seller?

bwwaaahahahaa! The mouse pic was funny!
I do understand that his mental condition is not funny and he definitely has issues, but the fact that he has bonded with these rats to the point of sharing a beer with them...well, you have to see a little humor in that. He is obviously a very kind and compassionate person too because he care so much for these filthy creatures.

Is there any way maybe she could buy him a few rats WITH A CAGE from the pet store and give them to him as a gift? And then bomb the stank out of them other rats.

I honestly would not be suprised if they were actual rats and not just little mice. we have rats out in the horse barn (not in my house) and last night I had to chase not one but five rats out of the old horses stall (old horse drops grain and the rats are all over that)
I am at a loss as to how to get rid of them, my barn cat weighs all of 5 pounds and literaly is too small to take down something as big as a rat. if I leave poison or traps out I could easily kill my barn cat or the peoples down the lane raccon.
I need some realy big barn cats.

I have a book on Taoism that has a daily reading and meditation. Yesterdays topic was "the lord of death." Like all things Tao, being in tune with nature, it said that "it is for the lord of death to decide when even the smallest insect should die." We should never play executioner.
I could probably find that easy to do outside, but inside I'll most likely remain a self-appointed "lord of death" with bugs and insects.":)

I'd be afraid to give him the book on Taoism. He is already a fanatic with the Bible. I can't imagine what he'd do with the book on Taoism. :p

That is just a strange situation, but I am a softy when it comes to rats and mice, so I can kind of see where he is coming from.
