I'm looking for an uncle who died in 1972. I keep hitting road blocks. Does anyone know of a place I can check out online to get the info?

Ancestry.com has old obituaries.

do I have to pay a fee? I don't want to pay a fee for something I'll not need again for a long time.

Not online, but the local library where he died should have the newspaper on microfilm. Ancestry.com is the only place online I can think of.

I was going to offer to search for you on ancestry.com, but I forgot that my membership just expired. :p Usually ancestry.com has an option where you can sign up for x number of days for free.

You can also try these (I'd try the last one first):

http://www.obitcentral.com/

http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/

http://www.legacy.com/NS/

So young. :(

I have no idea. I was looking for an older obit and never was able to find it. Thor laughs when I keep obits of family members and scrapbook them, but my grandkids will be able to find them!

Try contacting the newspaper in the town that he died in. They may have an obit archive online, but if it does not go back that far, you may be able to contact someone to do a lookup for you.

That town's library may have an archive as well, they may do a lookup for a small fee.
