My ds just turned 1 on Tuesday, and I send bm to daycare with him every day. The daycare uses the federal food program, and according to the FFP, once a child turns 1, you can no longer give them any other milk other than whole cow's milk. So, today I have to call the dr and have her write a note saying that he has to have bm and not cow's milk. Are you kidding me, what kind of idiots are running this program???

That is not the first time I've heard someone mention this. I'm not sure what the outcome ever was though...

Would they do that to a child who is lactose intolerant? Nope. They would give them soy or whatever else the child could have. So, why force a child who hasn't ever had a milk product ingest it?

Is there another daycare you can send him to? If they won't acknowledge the fact your child is on bm then what else won't they do when you ask them?

The daycare that we go to is Great, I really have no complaints, and they are on my side when it comes to the bm situation. However they have rules they have to follow, I can't complain because they give him well balanced meals, etc. They are not supposed to feed him any baby food either (according to the ffp), however they offer the table food and then if he does not eat well they give him the baby food to fill him up, and they are still giving him the bm. They are just having me get a note so that they will have it in their file when they get audited, etc. They are covering their butts and working with me as well.

I have never heard this before.

I had to do this with my DS1 on two counts - one, for the breastmilk and the second for dr permission not to give him any juice. The DCP director explained that their funding is based on a per child ratio, and if they don't use what they are given, funding is reduced. Therefore, they ask for a dr's note to account for surplus supplies.

That is one of the reason I have not become liscensed. If I stay self-certified I do not have to be one the food program and some of their rules are ridiculous. When DD1 was in daycare I told them he did not like rice cereal and not to give it to him. But they were required to give it to him for breakfast. Really. If the kid won't eat it isn't it healthier to give them a healthy alternative. Its not like he was 3 or 4 and you could tell him he has to finish his breakfast. Also when I did consider the food program I was told that I wasn't allowed to dillute the kids juice even though that was the only way I had ever made juice because it tended to cause loose stools with some of my kids. Some of the crap they come up with is ridiculous.

I sort of have to go through this every year with ds1. He is in fourth grade this year, and every year before school starts I have to get a doctors note stating that he can not be served cows milk with his lunch (which is all the school serves) and that I am permitted to send a juice box or something else with him to go with lunch. It really is a pain in my ass.

Holy crap! I had no idea about any of this weirdness. Makes me happy I never had to deal with daycare.

Same here on the licenses thing I have a hard time getting a few parents to understand but if I become licensed There are many rules like that, that I feel is well Bull.

I have heard of this also. It usually has nothing to do with the daycare center's attitude towards breastfeeing or extended nursing. It's entirely due to red-tape and government hoops that need to be jumped through in order for DCs to maintain their food funding.

Why would the government accept a doctor's note about breastmilk feeding, since breastmilk is not a medicine in any way. doctor's can't prescribe breastmilk, so why would their note regarding the feeding of it hold any more weight than a signed note of your own? Just because they hold a degree, yet have little to no training or knowledge in lactation? What if your doctor refuses to provide such a note cause they personally think you should wean at this age?
It's things that make you think hmmmmm.....

Actually, they can. Moms (or others) requesting milk from the milk bank must have a doctor's prescription.

Hey, wierd or not, I'm off to the fax machine to get my drs note to take to daycare this afternoon. If that's what I gotta do for them to give him bm, then that's what I'm going to do.

I'm most happy that you have such a well informed doctor, who is willing to cooperate with you in this.

That is ridiculous. Rice cereal isn't even healthy. I'm not feeding that crap to dd2. She will get oatmeal (I'll likely make my own from old fashioned oats and my mini food processor or a coffee grinder). WRT juice: ds is five and I still water his down!

I get WIC. I am issued 12 bottles of juice per month for ds and I (I'm on the bf package). I give about half of them away each month. It's crazy the amount of juice they think a kid needs.

DS still can't drink apple juice because it gives him the runs. White grape is the best for his stools.
