Do any of you use window guards? What brand and where did you get them?

Frick and Frack had the window open this morning and the freakin screen up. Now, they NEVER have opened a window nor did I know DS1 could. Those windows are not light at all, but what I lesson learned here. I am buying window guards this weekend. I was so freaked out I didn't know what to say or do. I heard DH say, "Guys, what are you doing?" and then I heard work boots flying down the hall as he ran to grab them away from the window. Lazy mom here was still sleeping.

Good golly those kids are going to kill me one day or give me gray hair much too early.

DS1 and I had a serious talk and he asked me, "Could we die and never come back?" I told him they could have gotten really hurt and we would be very sad. What a question to hear your sweet 4 yr old say. "Could we die..." *shudder*

I used a baby gate in an open window. Window guards are to expensive.

Do you use baby gates that are the latch kind or ones that screw into the window casing?

the pressure kind. I am talking about when I open a window. I'm not sure how to safty proof a closed window.

What about adding the storm windows? Then they'd have to open the window, the screen, and the storm window...

I'm not sure how old they are, but I agree that I wouldn't have expected such ingenuity!

Also, is there anything they climbed on to get to it that you could move away so the window's too high?

Good luck! That does sound scary.

Good luck. And let me know what you figure out.

What floor are you on?

If it's any comfort, the 2 kids I know who have fallen out of 2nd story windows escaped serious injury.

DS1 is 4 1/2 and DS2 is 21 months. DS1 stood on the window ledge and opened the window. Our windows have large wood molding around and the ledge is about 3inches wide at the bottom.

I am thinking of putting the storm windows down for now until I get the window guards. I don't use AC, so I rely on the breeze and the shade we get from our trees to cool the house. That isn't more important than our boys though.

Earthmama, Their bedroom is on the second level of our house.

CM, I found ones that can be opened by an adult during an emergency and can withstand 150lbs of weight on them. My sister had the same worry about a fire too.

The baby gate idea is out though. I would be worried that they could stand up on the ledge and pull it out of the window. DS2 has already learned that he can pull and wiggle the gate until it pops out of the door and it is on the tightest setting I can get.

I swear these boys are little Macgyver's. I walked out on our porch one day and stepped onto shards of glass. I yelled out and DS1 came running outside. He asked what happened and I told him I had gotten hurt and couldn't figure out where the glass came from. He then informed me he was trying to make a fire by striking two rocks together. Unfortunately for me, he used a piece of lava rock he had and a more solid rock. The lava rock shatters like glass.
