View Full Version : BFing and Food Poisoning? **Maybe some TMI**

I am pretty sure DH and I have food poisoning of some type. We ordered pizza and wings from Domino's Saturday night and he ate the wings and 1 piece of pizza while I had 3 pieces of pizza over the span of about 3 hours. The pizza is the only thing we ate in common and that's why I'm thinking it may be the culprit. WDYT?

DH woke up Sunday morning feeling very nauseous which persisted throughout the day. He never vomited or had any diarrhea though. Later in the evening he spiked a fever of 102.1 and had the chills pretty bad. Still no vomiting or diarrhea. Just terrible nausea, stomach pain and fever/chills.

I felt fine throughout the day and ate and drank as I normally would. Around 9pm, I started feeling nauseous myself. I nursed DS2 to sleep around 9:30 and I tried to have some crackers and ice water to settle my stomach. By 11pm, I was puking my guts out. I vomited literally every 15-20 min til 2am. I vomited so much there wasn't anything left to trow up. Just some bile and a lot of dry heaving. So much so, that I woke up with broken blood vessels in the skin surrounding my eyes. :(

Around 1am, I started having diarrhea, too. I was finally able to fall back asleep around 3am and slept til 6am. I woke up at 6am feeling terribly dehydrated and lousy in general. I called in to work and tried to drink some water. Ten minutes later, out came the water. I laid back down for another hour and a half til the baby woke up at which time I bottle fed him some EBM I had pumped on Friday. I was afraid to physically BF him not knowing what the hell is wrong with me. I then pumped and put that BM in the fridge until I could do a little research on the safety of BFing and possible food poisoning.

After some googling, I was able to reasonably determine that it's okay to BF if mom has food poisoning since the pathogens seemed to be contained in the GI tract. I also read where the only time a mom may have to temporarily suspend BFing is during the first 24hrs of treatment if the bacteria moves into the blood-stream. Has anyone else dealt with a similar issue? Does thie info I found sound correct? I would appreciate any other info or anecdotal experience anyone else may have to offer.

Thanks so much. :(

I haven't dealt with it, but I sure hope you feel better soon!

Oh my you poor thing!

I haven't gone through that either while nursing but I could imagine that you should be just fine. Just take care of yourself and get as much rest as you can!

It would be very rare for you to become septic/bacteremic from food poisioning unless you are somehow immunocompromised. It's very possible that it's not food poisioning at all and just a virus you both have. There's really no way to tell without having the food or yourself tested. In any event, it's most likely that it's perfectly safe for you to continue to bf. I would and have :). I hope you're all feeling better soon.
