I noticed some white patches on my baby's tongue, and thought, "Oh, great... thrush." I went to the doctor, and he agreed. We actually have twin 6 week old boys, and I asked him if we needed to treat them both. He said yes, and that they would both get it from me from nursing.
So now I'm home. We've been treating the boys for 4 days, and I don't see any signs of anything, anymore. But, I'm a little sore, and it made me realize... the doctor didn't write me anything for ME! Dang it!
I'm going to call tomorrow, but do you think I'll have to take an antibiotic? Ugh. I do know that my ped says he's not into anything violet, LOL. We've had several babies, but not thrush before.
Thanks in advance for your insight!

thrush resources.
not antibiotics, thrush is yeast, which tends to overgrow in our systems when we've taken antibiotics.

You definitely need something for you. If your doctor perscribed Nystatin for you, you might want to rethink this as the suspension contains sugar which is what yeast (thrush) eats. It's pretty common to get rebound thrush after a course of Nystatin or Nilstat.
AmyG's link is an awesome one! Lots of good info there. If your doctor isn't "into" anything violet (meaning Gentian Violet) I'd want to know why. This stuff can be very effective in treating thrush. It's messy, which is a drawback, but I'd trade thrush for messy any day :).

I prefer using GSE over the GV, it is not messy and is very effective for treating mom and babies, make sure everyone is treated simultaneously. I agree that nystatin is not effective and yeast will often sneak back, twice as strong:(

Personally, I have used the Gentian Violet everytime with great sucess. All three of my kids had thrush at one point or another. With my dd the first time around I got the Nystatin. That worked for crap. Then I went the Gentian Violet route for about $5 for the tube that will last forever versus the $25 prescription copay and what do ya know, it worked. *If* you go that route it is pretty easy. You get the GV and take a cotton swab, dip a clean end in (do not redip) and swab your nipples and areolas. Wait a bit, you want to let it stay on you for a bit. Let the kids nurse. You both get treated at the same time. I wear a black shirt and put a towel on my sheet when I do this.
I have also heard raves about the GSE. While I haven't used it for thrush I have used it for a vaginal yeast infection. I was on Diflucan (best drug available at the time by prescription for vaginal yeast) for three days. It did not help much at all. I bought a home douche kit and mixed in the proper amounts of GSE and after using that twice it was gone.

I actually have some GSE I used for a different ailment. I'll have to give it a try! (It does taste terrible! Poor babies!)

I've only ever used gentian violet for thrush and it worked wonders. It cost me just under $1 for one bottle of gentian violet. I barely used any of the bottle to treat it.
