Hi,
The past few weeks when my nine month old starts eating it is very painful. It started out on the left side and now it is on the right too. It usually only hurt at first and then was fine after a min. Then about a week ago the center milk duct "cracked" open and a little piece of skin pulled off. and now the duct bleeds a little and first when he eats and last night it really bled a lot so I couldn't feed him on that side. My nipples are not dry or cracked on the outside so I am not sure what I can do. I don't want to stop breast feeding him yet, but I also don't want to feed him milk with blood in it.
We don't have health insurance right now so I don't want to go to a doctor unless I really need to.
I have breast feed my two other children no problem and Logan was no problem for about the first 8 months.
I would really appreciate any help with this.
Thanks

Is there anything unusual about the breast itself?

I don't think so.

I don't know either why this would happen after 8 months. Is there a lactation consultant nearby or a LaLeche League mother that can help you? You can pump while letting the nipples heal. Any pain radiating back to the chest? Does the baby change the shape of your nipple?

I am not sure if there is a consultant or laleche league Mother. I will look into that. There isn't any in my chest. After he is done eating there is pain that radiates in the breast. When he is easting and just after the nipple gets long.

I wish I could offer more help, but I really need to see him nurse and look at your nipples to figure out what is happening. I am in Massachusetts. Where are you?

I would recommend contacting a local LC and your midwife or doctor.
