View Full Version : Zani's 9mo. Check-up and a Vax ?

Today DD turned 9mo. and she had her check-up. She's just shy of 18lbs and 27 inches long. She's doing great! Staying on her 25% and 50% curve. She did get a finger prick for the iron test. The prick didn't phase her one bit. The finger squeezing annoyed her after awhile though...I'd be pissed to if someone kept squeezing my little, tiny finger.

We have yet to get any vaccinations. Again we skipped them this time. However, I did have some questions about the DtaP vaccine. There have been several local cases of whooping cough, the pedi has had 3 recent patients and there have been cases at our church (luckly we haven't been in a while). After talking to him and some other people I am considering getting this vax. But I'm just not sure yet. WDYT? How serious is pertussis? What's your opinion? We still haven't decided yet. He said we can stop by anytime if we decide to get it. I'd really like to hear your opinions.

And of course here are a few recent pics:

She is a cutie!

I know Dr. Sears offers an alternative vax schedule. On the website, it stated whooping cough can be fatal in young infants and is still a common disease. Check out askdrsears.com for more info.

I'd get that one. Stephanie is correct and here where I live it is becoming "common" where a decade ago we never had any cases.

BTW what a cutie.

Isn't the headband halarious..LOL DD thought so too...lol

I'm seriously considering this vaccine. I'm just so scared both ways. I'm afraid she'll get sick without it and i'm afraid she'll have a reaction to it or as silly as it may sound she'll never be the same after the fact. She has been such a healthy baby. I think she's had one stuffy nose for one day and thats all she's ever had.

I'm gonna read what Dr. Sears has to say about it...

Our dds are about the same age and size. She is darling. Such a cutie. I did vax everything. You can go to the CDC site and find out how many outbreaks are in your area. Our Pedi gave that to us with the vax info. It was scary to see these illnesses.

She's adorable. I would get that vax just in case.

She's adorable! Pertussis was one of the vaccines I worried about not getting. I worried less after Jack reached 6 months, but I don't think I really stopped worrying until he was 2. The best advice I can give you about whether or not to get any particular vaccine is to research and then make the decision that you're the most comfortable with. I don't think there's anything you can choose that won't cause you at least some worry. I mean worry is just a part of being a parent.

You're right Jacksmom...but its such a hard choice to make.

There are some serious side effects, although extremely uncommon, that I just can't get past. Like Seizures, or even long-term seizures or comas, brain damage or lowered consciousness. Although I know those side effects are so rare, I just couldn't live with myself if I did this to my baby girl.

Some how I feel as though I have less control of the situation with the vax and more control without the vax. If she shows any signs of flu-like/cold-like symptoms I would be the first one at the pedi's office. In early stages it can be effectively treated...still on the fence.

I selectively delay and did get the DtaP for my kids. I'm sure you can find people here that say don't get it, as well as those who say get it right on time. You need to do what you're confortable with. I always look at risks vs benifits. There has been a lot of cases of whopping cough here, serious cases too in both adults and children. For us, the chance of a possible complication from DtaP is incredibly low compared to the benifits.

You sound like me. I looked at my baby, and he was so perfect. I couldn't give him anything that might hurt him. The vax, for me, was a real risk, and I just couldn't do it. Pertussis in my area was not common, and it wasn't like Jack went out and hung out with friends or anything. He was home with me. That's why I decided that I was more comfortable not vaxing. I still worried though.
