I am nursing my third child, but he is the first that I have nursed exclusively. He is two months old and never had a bottle.
My letdown is painful....kind of burns. The pain is only in the breast and nipple. When he latches on and starts to suck the pain increases and lasts for a full minute. Once we are past the letdown, nursing does not hurt.
I have been treated for yeast in my milkducts and on my nipples. I do not think that is the problem. I have talked to several lactation consultants and they agree that I just have a painful letdown.
My question is....Is there anything at all that I can do to lessen the pain?

Can you tell me about what your nipples look like when he comes off?

They look like they should...long and round. My nipples are not cracked or irritated in any other way. They are easily irritated when not nursing though. For example, if my two year old bumps into me even lightly my nipple feels irritated.

DO you ever notice any color changes?

Not really. Occasionally the nipple is a little more pink after he eats, but it goes away as it dries.
