I have a two week old baby. She was 7lbs at birth. She is currently 6lbs 13oz and was that weight when weighed on 8/11/08 and 8/4/08. Our Dr suggested that I pump to ensure that the baby is getting required amounts of milk. She stated the baby should be getting approximately 24oz of milk a day. When I pump for approx 20 minutes I am getting only around one ounce of milk. I have been breastfeeding around 9 times a day. The doctor wants me to supplement the breastfeeding if the baby does not gain proper amount of weight this week. I am trying to pump every couple of hours and also am breastfeeding as well. Any other ideas? I am getting frustrated!

First of all congratulations! Most babies do regain birth weight by 2 weeks but I see many that take 3 weeks. The most important thing is for the baby to be transfering enough milk each feed. An LC with an adequate scale can help you with this...see this site for an LC directory in your area. Pumping after nursing is good for emptying your breasts and having extra milk to supplement with but it can also be stressful for you. I do not like formula but sometimes it is necessary for supplementing inthe first few weeks.
Know that what you pump is not a accurate indication of what your baby is getting, i.e. baby is probably getting more.
I would work closely with an LC and seach for LLL support groups in your area.
I would supplement at breast not bottle.
I would pump for 15min every 3 hours MAX. Sleep at night if baby sleeps.
It is frustrating but things will get better.
