So I really want an Ergo carrier, my baby is a big boy and far too large for the moby (which is my favorite and i'm so sad it isn't working any more...he's just too heavy and the fabric stretches) so after some extensive research I've decided to go with the Ergo but it's so freaking expensive! I've checked ebay and there are some available...so would you buy one from someone you didn't know? Why/why not? TIA

I don't understand - why wouldn't you? What would be the hesitation?

I'd buy one. I'm pretty sure they are washable, so that would make me comfortable.

Of course I'd buy one on Ebay...but when I was looking for one a couple of months ago, the prices were sky high on Ebay. If you find a great deal (including shipping costs), why not?

I ended up getting one from DH for Mother's Day, brand new:) Sweet!

Be careful on E-bay. I just tried buying an Ergo and it was a scam.

I've never bought something on ebay and got scammed. But when it happens, and I am sure it does, there is a process to follow to report that person. Hotlama, I would suggest you do so.

I never buy from a seller who has less than a 97% or so good feedback rating.

I just thought I'd add that I absolutely LOVE my Ergo. We're done having kids, but it's one of the few things I refuse to get rid of until we get some permanent birth control.

Oh, I did. It just sucks because now I have to wait for Paypal to get my money back before I can buy an Ergo.

Actually I have a question...can you wear baby in front but facing outward with a ergo? I don't think DD would be to happy about facing my back or my chest.

I was wondering the same thing. DD loves to face outward too. Just bumping to see if anyone knows the answer.

According to the information included with my Ergo...it specifically states that it is not to be used to face baby outward. Baby needs to face inward when wearing the Ergo.

Can I face my baby out when I wear her on the front?
The ERGObaby carrier is designed in compliance with the recommendations of Dr. Evelin Kirkilionis, and SHOULD NEVER BE WORN WITH THE BABY FACING OUT.
According to Kirkilionis:"Infants in outward-facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli. They can't turn inward toward a parent's body if stimuli become overwhelming. In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation. Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you ... never out. There are too many events going on around your baby. A baby has no way to exclude himself from the environment by turning his head away and towards you. Healthy sleep is difficult for a baby who is facing outward. I am not a supporter of the outward facing method of carrying a child."

From - A Baby Wants To Be Carried by Dr. Eveline Kirkilionis (available in German) Dr. Kirkilionis is a human development specialist who has researched babywearing since 1985

There really isn't any information on why the babies cannot face outwards in the Ergo except the information above. The above was from Ergo's web site. Hmmn, interesting.

Now, I'm gonna research this a little more. I've only wore the Ergo with DD facing inwards (whether she's on my back or on the front).

Baby Facing Out in the Ergo
Okay, let me preface this by saying that it is not in any way a requirement that babies should face out in baby carriers. Everyone asks about facing out because they are used to seeing babies in the Baby Bjorn baby carrier. Think about it. Before the Baby Bjorn became common, which really was quite recent, babies were not worn facing out for very long. And when you hold your baby, it is natural to hold your baby facing towards you. Babywearing is about using a baby carrier to support a baby hands-free in a position you'd naturally carry them. Yes, sometimes you hold them facing out, but not generally for very long.

But my baby wants to see!
Newborns can't see much at all, just things that are very close to them. And older babies can turn their heads. A baby that is facing out can not turn away from stimulation and can not see the face of mom or dad. Babies are designed to continually check in with mom or dad, see their reactions, and learn about the world around them. And when a baby is ready to sleep, they can more easily close their eyes and drift off if facing in. When facing out, they can't turn off the stimulation and they can get over stimulated and stay awake too long, getting a second wind and getting fussy. The saddest babywearing thing I have ever seen was a baby hanging off dad's back, facing out. I don't get that! Babies want to be included in what you are doing! That is the joy of babywearing!

I am including some information on babies facing out not because I think it is something you should do very often. It is a party trick. The manufacturer does not recommend you ever wear the baby facing out.

I am going to tell you how to do it safely.

It is important that a baby's spine curve naturally. So if you put the baby in the Ergo facing out, you want to tuck her hips under her; roll them out, so her lower back is against your belly. Her knees will be up in the air. It looks a little funny this way. So, if you won't want her feet strangely sticking out, you can go ahead and put them inside the Ergo. Another variation is to put your baby in the Ergo with her legs crossed or knees up. Play around with it facing a mirror and your baby will have a grand time. The point is, you don't try to make the Ergo something it's not. The idea is not to have your baby's legs together and straight down. There is a reason that the Ergo is wide. It is designed to support the baby's entire bottom, not just the crotch. This is so your baby will be comfortable and ergonomically supported.

So, if you do try playing around with facing out, don't keep baby in there for hours. Babies certainly can take being scrunched up longer than we can; they were inside mom fo 9 months, some folded in half for the end of those months. They are super flexible and can take scrunching, but be mindful of your baby's need to stretch out and move.

NEWS! By popular demand! A video of how to do facing out with a little baby (or a doll). Sorry, the Ergo Facing Out VIdeo is not of the best quality. Keep in mind that you get to play with leg positioning; it depends upon your baby. And this is not a position for all the time. This is an occasional, for a few minutes. Facing in is the way to go!

This was from this web site: http://www.the-ergo-lady.com/ergo-baby-carrier/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=62&products_id=27.

Very interesting reading and tips on that site versus the Ergo web site.

On the newer Ergos, baby can also be worn on the hip. But, fwiw, even the newish snuggli we bought at Goodwill is designed so baby can't be worn facing out. DD hates it. She hated the Ergo, too.

My almost 8 month old still loves to face me! He ca still see whats going on but in really crowded places he freaks out when facing out...he's a pretty shy baby at first and then warms up. When using a wrap I always wear him facing me so no issue with the ergo, interesting conversation though.

My DD is very social...she loves to be out and about and look at everything. When she was younger she didn't mind facing me in the carrier that we have. Now she gets annoyed when put in it facing in...she rather see whats out in the world.

I don't really use the carrier we have much anyways...but I just thought if I invested in one I would want it to be one that allowed her to face out as well as in.

Good to know..thx for the links!

I would like to add that this has nothing to do with ergo, but with outward facing.

I have a 5 yard piece of fabric for my 18 month old to create a makeshift baja breeze, He's fine facing inwards because he can still look around and see that I'm right there with him.

Your baby can be social even when facing inward looking sideways. The "problem" with facing outward is that you won't see when (if) your baby is overwhelmed. My dd2 is very social yet she loved to snuggle up to me in the Ergo. I too loved my Moby but got an Ergo when she was around 8 mo. I put her on my back pretty soon after that; it was MUCH easier on my back.

I wonder about also checking out Craigslist as they will have local sellers in your area...I noticed someone in my area is trying to sell one currently.
