View Full Version : Does this mean dairy intolerance??

I'll try to keep this brief. I started my 9mo old on whole milk yogurt a little over a week ago. The first few days I noticed nothing different. Then over the past 5-7 days she's had slightly runny, mucusy poops. Not all poops are this way but maybe one per day (she usually poops 2-3/day). Anyhow do you think this may be a dairy intolerance? Do you think it could be caused by teething? I've never restricted my dairy while breastfeeding if that makes any difference. The doctor really wanted me to do the yogurt as it's high in fat/calories and DD is slow to gain at this point. She only gets about 1-2 TBSP of it with breakfast.

As long as the baby doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, I wouldn't worry about occasional poop that is outside "normal". I would start to investigate possible causes when the majority of the poop is like that, or she seems bothered or uncomfortable.

Sounds like it could be intolerance. Do they seem to be a different color, esp. green? or have very small threads of blood? My ds did this when he got a 2 oz. bottle of Enfamil while I was at work. I haven't had to restrict my diet either, but the solid milk seems to be a problem. Is there anything else you can give her for a few days to see if that's the problem?

She doesn't seem uncomfortable other than the teething she's going through.
There's no blood and he poops can be a little green sometimes. We have been working through an on again, off again foremilk imbalance.
I was thinking I'll take her off it for a few days to see what happens.

Is she fussier when you have had a lot of dairy 24 hours prior?

Teething could easily be a cause. Since you had no diet restriction during nursing , I would not be too concerned. Just something to watch.

I would not worry that it is a dairy intolerance quite yet. I battled multiple food allergies with my little one for MONTHS and there will be other signs if that is in fact what is going on. I find it hard to believe that she is having an insensitivity or allergy since you have never eliminated this from you diet. What other solids is she on? Any teething biscuits, etc? There is dairy in those, I'm sure.
I would continue to give it to her and watch her stools. If the color begins to turn green along with additional mucous and/or blood, then it would be safe to say that it could be an insensitivity and to eliminate it and see if she improves. She will also become gassy and uncomfortable from a belly ache if the is indeed reacting.
Teething could also cause mucousy stools... teething causes extra saliva production, which equals swallowing a lot more, and it pretty much comes out how in goes down.
With all that said... it is possible (although not as likely) that she is reacting to dairy when it is given directly rather than amounts via breastmilk. Like I said, continue to give it to her until you see concrete evidence that there is a problem.
Best of luck to you.

I'm going to guess teething on this one. Both of mine have had dairy intolerances and both have had some slimey nasty diapers when teething.

IA with teething on this unless other probloms show up. Both of my DC have multiple FA's and there have always been other signs. Teething can cause more frequent, and unplesant diapers.

Does she have any eczema or a red "ring" rash around her anus?

Honestly at 9 months if you wonder about dairy intolerance, I'd stop the yogurt and try again in a month or two to see if she does the same thing.
I wouldn't push it right now.
