I gave birth to an 8lbs 10oz boy on June 21 he is current 8 weeks old. I didn't get to start to BF after birth because he was born late in the night and they had to do the basic work up on him so I we started 6am the next day. With my previous child I breastfed him until 5 months because of my overactive letdown, a lot of nursing strikes and his bad colic/fussiness due to cow-milk sensitivity in my breast milk.

I'm starting to have the same problems again with OALD and we are going through our millionth nursing strike. Normally he would nurse one breast 5-7 minutes on demand or 2-3hrs. I tried block nursing for 3 days when he was 3-4 weeks old. I wasn't sure if I should have went on for longer. It seems that didn't work. I also tried unlatching him while my letdown slows and putting him back to no avail. Once the milk squirts in his mouth he refuses the breast even if I change positions. The one he accepts the most is the side-laying position. But I can't be laying down all day with 2 school-aged kids and a toddler at home. I also noticed that my his fontanelle is sunken 98% of the time. So I not really so sure if he is well hydrated. When I change his diaper his urine is not really pale and diapers aren't sopping wet. I'm confused still because a visit to the doctor and a hospitalization later (me thinking he was dehydrated although doctors didn't seem to pay me much mind and hospitalized him suspecting sepsis ) we still are having trouble nursing. He barely nurses at night he wakes up 1-2 every 4 hrs at night. Nurses 2-3 hours during the day but still seems hungry, sucks his hand vigorously and he often refuses the breast which leaves me uncomfortably full. I bought a manual pump to express when full and since he was 5 weeks I been supplementing with 1-2 bottles of formula taken reluctantly because of my fears of dehydration. I'm terribly clueless and broke at that so I can't say I can afford a lactation consultant. HELP!!:(

Well you have a difficult situation to resolve via chat. Since you are giving him formula pumping with a rental hospital grade pump will definitely increase your chances of providing only breastmilk for him. Have you tried a nipple shield? Have you called your insurance company to ask if they will pay for an LC? The LaLeche League is a volunteer organization. You need someone face to face with you to help you best.
