So DH went out with a friend on friday night and his friend ended up getting a DUI. Thank God DH wasn't driving...I throw a huge fit if he even thinks about driving to the bar. I think it is stupid to drive to a place where you plan on drinking alchohol so that you can possibly risk driving and getting arrested at the very least or even worse hurting someone. So anyway what do you all think about the new drinking laws. I think they are stupid and ineffective. I think that if they want to prevent drinking and driving they should prohibit driving to the bar period or charging every driver for a breathalizer as they leave the bar to prevent them from getting into the car in the first place.

What are the new laws? I haven't heard of anything changing.
I don't have a problem with someone driving to a bar. It's the driving home that I have the problem with. Fortunetly for us, we live in a small town so DH has no issue with walking home. He's even done it in the middle of the winter. I'm not a big drinker so if we are going out together I'll let him drive me there and he'll let me drive him home.

I guess maybe not the "new" laws...but I don't know about everywhere else but here drinking one drink will put u over the legal limit.

OK. I'm really bad about that, I've never been able to remember what the limit is or how much alcohol will raise you BAL.

I think I would be more consered about my DH getting into the car with someone who was drinking then driving. Why was one of the men not designated to be driver and stayed sober? Bad judgement all around, IMO.

ok, so I guess I have to be the first one to say, your dh was incredibly stupid for getting in the car with his friend who had been drinking. I hope you have talked about that with him. Im not trying to be harsh, hearing things like that upset me incredibly, I lost a VERY close family member to drunk driving. You dh and friend could have killed someone or been killed themselves. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
As far as the laws go, you are not permitted to drive after drinking, and it should stay that way. A breathalyzer test on a car would be too easy to cheat. I think if you're going to the bar you need to hand over your ID and your keys at the door, and have to pass a breathalyzer in order to retrieve your keys. Otherwise drunk ass person needs to pay for a taxi!

This. That is exactly what I meant.
And I agree with you. I think it was stupid that he got into the car with him. And I did tell him that. I think that passing a breathalyzer before being allowed to leave the bar is a WONDERFUL idea and I don't know why it hasn't been thought of before. I personally don't ever drive to the bar the few times I go out. I think its just asking for trouble. I don't drink very often so even 1 or 2 drinks is all I can handle.

No doubt. Not a common sense decision no matter which way he went.

Yes dh getting into a car with a drunk driver is just as bad as driving drunk himself. He may not get a dui but he's still at risk of killing himself and others. I'm glad no one was hurt.

I've driven home from the bar many times. Back when I was always the designated driver. ;)

WHAT? Where do you live?
It's .08 in every state in the US. That's more than one drink. In fact, the average can drink one drink every hour to 1.5 hour and stay below the legal limit, more if you are heavy/male/are drinking while eating.

This is a great idea: disposable breathalysers (http://www.safety-devices.com/breathscan.htm).

This is one of those things that drives me crazy. Either drive or drink, you can't do both, it's ridiculous that grown adults need to be told and policed but they obviously do. So then I agree with you that if adult people can't manage not to kill themselves and others having to pass to get your keys makes sense. Why not get them before they get on the road?
