View Full Version : How do you not know you're preggo??

My title may be deceiving...as I went 15 weeks without no clues either.
Here's the best one that I personally know of.
DH's cousin John is in a committed relationship with Jayne. (not their real names, in case they happen to read here)
They were at a softball tournament out of town this weekend. Jayne began having really bad back pains, so they came home from the tournament today and she went to the hospital to see what was wrong.
Jayne was in labor!! OMG!!! They had NO IDEA that she was even expecting a little one. So of course, they have nothing for a new baby.
John is most excellent with kids, as is Jayne. I'm sure they'll be great parents but that's not my point here.
My point is how do you go that far (til you're unknowingly in labor) in pregnancy without knowing????
Gosh, I hope everything goes alright with delivery. She's in labor right now and only dilated to 9. What a great weekend to have a baby, huh?

I don't know either! Maybe she was in denial or just really oblivious?
But congrats on your new baby cousin!

Omg...I've always wondered this! I've heard of people thinking they had to take a big dump only to see a baby in the toilet or having back pain and out comes a baby in the bathtub....etc. etc. My sil's sister was 6 months before she knew she was pg. She was a big girl, though....but wouldn't you feel the baby move? Gosh, mine kept me up until 4am most nights.
I however, I know from day 1 that I'm pg...normally starts with the sore bb's, then the incessant peeing, exhaustion and soon after...the puking for the remaining 8 months. I almost wish I could safely go halfway through my pregnancy without knowing because those 9+ months seem like years.

I can't imagine that. I mean, even if you're tall and carry the baby really well and barely gain weight, I can see how you wouldn't LOOK pg, and if you have irregular periods, I can see how you wouldn't notice being 'late', but you still have a baby in there moving around. I mean, I've had gas before, but not one that gets hiccups and makes my whole abdomen jump around. I don't get that.

If she's used to the absence of periods, the baby is a light mover (possibly mistaken for gas or indigestion), she didn't gain much weight or had a small baby, or she gained weight and just chalked it up to her diet or exercise habits, she didn't have nausea/vomiting or dismissed it as a virus, and had an otherwise uneventful pregnancy, I could see it happening. It actually happened to a friend of mine. She found out she was pregnant when she was 36-37 weeks, I believe. Her baby was around 5lbs, and she had very irregular periods.
ETA: Now, me, personally, that couldn't happen to. I'm obsessive about testing when I notice certain signs and symptoms. I also had huge babies that tried to claw their way out from the inside, so there was no mistaking it. However, I know women who had breezy pregnancies and didn't show at all until they were 8 months pregnant.

If you don't know what fetal movement/hiccups/kicks feel like, and you're not even entering the possibility of pregnancy into your mind, I could see how one might pass it off as something else - especially if the baby is a lazy one.

I can't imagine. Both my boys preformed circus tricks in my belly. Not to mention getting big as a house. And also not to mention all my pregnancy ailments.

I didn't know with my first one. I had not had a period for months. I took a pregnancy test 6 weeks after the day I would have conceived and it came back negative. I did not show at all, I was an obsessive excerciser and had "abs of steel" which prevented my stomach from sticking out. I did not feel sick, I did not feel more tired than usual, in fact I felt better than I ever did. The baby was quiet and I never felt the baby move, the doctor said she was probably moving around at night when I slept. I found out I was pregnant 4 weeks before she was born because I had a kidney infection.

I just am in awe! Jayne is a really big woman. She's maybe 5'11" and sort of on the chubby side (so am I, don't get me wrong) to begin with. But it's not like she's even close to 300 lbs or anything like that. She was looking a bit heavier than normal but there's no way she looked preggo. We just saw them at another cousin's wedding last weekend.
I agree that if you didn't know what the movements were supposed to feel like, had irregular cycles, and didn't have any pregnancy symptoms...then of course it could happen.
(Like I said before, I was 15 weeks along before I knew. My cycles were off and on for the previous 2 years prior to conception.)
Haven't heard yet if she delivered the baby. We're going to donate them DD's nicer infant seat, if they want it of course. It's an Eddie Bauer one from Target. We're still using the matching stroller but the infant seat is pretty darn nice.

I was talking to another mom while we were waiting for the kids to get out of school. She said her cousin (or something) was pregnant and had no idea. She had always had irregular periods and didnt gain any weight. I think her pants got tight but not where she had to get a larger size. Well one night she started having bad pains and was bleeding. So her and her boyfriend went to the er. A couple hours later they had a baby.
I remember her saying that her cousin, called her mom a couple times through out the months saying that she had stomach pains and alot of gas. But it never crossed any ones mind that she could be pregnant.

I am asked this often. With Brian, I did not discover I was pregnant until around 15 weeks. With this pregnancy, accidently found out around 8ish weeks. Could have easily gone until 15 weeks again like with Brian.
Simple answer is: I have VERY irregular periods. I went from having 2-3 periods a year before Brian to bleeding nearly everyday for 4 years after Brian was born. Day of my wedding, I thought hmm, maybe I should test....double line.
With this one, we moved and had been a bit more regular than normal and found a unused pregnancy test and thought, what the heck. Double line.
Shocked both times. :)
The question can be annoying at times but when I say, when you get 2-3 periods a year and don't have pregnancy symptoms, it can be tough. They seem satisfied with the answer.

I went 15 weeks without knowing, too. But I suspected for weeks and even tested negative at one point. I concieved less than 3 weeks after a miscarriage so I didn't think I could possible be pregnant. That baby will be 10 in December.
I can't imagine getting past 17/18 weeks without knowing for sure, though. My own body changes too much at that point that it becomes very obvious to me. And by 20 weeks it's obvious to the world.
Wow. I think it's a great surprise, though. =D

My mom's good friends daughter had this happen to her. She had a baby girl and never lost the baby weight or the baby tummy. She thought that she was destined to be fat forever until she went to the hospital for what she thought was appendicitis, 9 months and 3 weeks after her daughter was born. Instead of appendicitis, it was a son. She had no idea that she was pregnant.

I have had gas pains that felt EXACTLY like ds moving when I was pregnant. and I was NOT pregant at the time, even dh felt my belly and said it felt the same. so I could really see if the mother gained little weight and carried just the right way and had irregular periods that it could go unoticed.
heck I was walking around work going on 9 months pregnant and one of my coworkers complained a little bit that I got a stool to sit on when no one else did. he was very very shocked and opolgitic when I told him how pregnant I was.

The baby is here!!
I don't know what time he was born (between 11:30 last night and 8am this morning)...I'm guessing he may have been close to full term.
Baby boy weighed 9lb 7oz and was 22 inches long.
(both mom and dad are very tall...mom is at least 5'11" and dad is probably 6'1"- at least.)
From what we know so far today, both mama and baby are doing excellent! We're going to visit later this morning.

That's a big baby! What a shock! I hope mom and baby continue doing well and everyone adjusts quickly into having an instant family :)
The entire 9 months were hellishly uncomfortable for me both times. I can't imagine not knowing.

I know someone who went to the hospital with back pain and was told she was in labor, she was in total shock. Then the poor girl had a social worker barking at her through her labor asking if she was going to keep the baby or not, and she was trying to just get through the birth.

The pediatrician estimated that the baby was at least a week overdue. His skin had already started peeling (no idea on skin peeling while in the belly yet).
His breathing wasn't all good when he was delivered this morning, so he's in the NICU. We did go down to see him, he's a big beautiful boy. I hope that everything works out for him!

I know one mom who didn't know until she was 7 months. She was slim and active. She also has early alzheimers markers, so it was just scary across the board. We have lots of friends who know her well, but no one knows what her official dx is.
The child is 4 now and healthy. The dad takes her most of the week and the mom gets her a couple days supervised.

Wow. I have met a gal that didn't know she was pregnant until she delivered. She carried the baby really far back towards her back I guess so....
Congrats to them! I hope he is well and in mama's arms :)

I overcook my babies and peeling skin is a sign of being overdue. My youngest dd was 9 days late and came out like a molting reptile. I pulled loose skin off of her for weeks.

I had no pregnancy symptom for the first 10 weeks. I came to find out I was pregnant while trying to get an epidural for my sciatic pain. My periods are irregular so I didn't even noticed I had skipped a few weeks!
Even after knowing I was pregnant, I didn't have any other symptoms till about 4 months (when I finally felt ds move and the heartburn really kept me up at night!)

that happened with my cousin. she didn't know she wasn't pregnant till it was time for the baby to come.
She had her period the entire time...she is heavy set so that may have masked any weight gain...
