Can I keep them from getting yucky so that they can go in DS's lunch?

No... but you can cut them up and sprinkle with some sugar and cinnamon and cook them until they are soft and make applesauce :)

Add a little lemon juice and they should stay.

I'll try lemon juice. He doesn't like my homemade applesauce. :(

You could, but I personally wouldn't. The lemon juice might or might not work.

Yes. Buy dark red, sweet apples and then dip the entire slice in 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1/4 cup water. I do this all the time. The only complaint that my kids have is that the lemon juice makes the green apples too sour. Using the red apples tends to make it less sour and my kids have never complained.
