My son is the "prince of spit-up"...he continually spits up breastmilk from the moment he finishes eating (sometimes during nursing) until it's time to eat again. The spit-up appears as clear breast milk, milk mixed with a little mucus and curdled milk...dependant on how far from his last nursing he spits. I've discussed with my doctor and she indicates that some babies are just prone to spitting more than others...I can accept that cause it all seems to be pretty harmless. He is not bothered by the spitting at all...no crying associated with it, etc. All in all he's a very content baby...gaining weight and all. One thing that is new to the spitting up however is him making "chewing motions" with his mouth...does that mean anything to anyone?? Anyways...my real question for you all is whether I should consider cutting dairy and caffeine out of my diet to prevent so much spitting? I have 1-2 cups of coffee a day and I drink milk on cereal, eat yogurt, icecream and cheese, etc...the dairy is in varied amounts each day depending on what's for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He's going on 3 months so I am also curious if his spitting up will slow down as he gets older.

I've got a spitter too and he's 8 months old. It was constant in the beginning just like you describe. I did cut out all dairy for awhile but that was more for gas issues (it didn't help the spitting up at all) and then added back cheese and yogurt and now finally milk. Now he spits up breastmilk mixed with peas and carrots, so it's multi-colored! Fun!!!! Doctor told me not to worry about it unless he seems to be in pain which he never has so...basically I just try to cover anything that might get ruined (thank god i have carpet that doesn't show stains) and make sure he wears a bib with nice clothes. The amount that comes out sometimes is amazing but I guess it's nothing to worry about...every time we go to the doctor I ask because it seems so abnormal :)

On the otehr hand, i had a spitter who ended up being a GERD baby with a dairy allergy. We would use recivimg blankets as burp clothes and she would go through 10 or more outfits a day, and I would go through 4 or 5 shirts myself. Also her weight was fine at first, but as she got older her weight gained slowed and then stopped. My pedi insisted it was ok, and that it was normal, but it DD's case, they were wrong. I am not saying that I think your child has a dairy allergy or GERD, just telling you our experiance.
You can always cut out dairy for 2 or 3 months and see if that helps any.
