View Full Version : Pumping in bathroom
Hi - I need to vent. I'm starting a new part-time job on Tuesday in which I have to go to training for. When I inquired if there was a private room I could use for 15 minutes to pump, the response was, "There are 2 bathrooms I could use." I'm soooooooo annoyed b/ do they feed their child in a bathroom??? I'm working for a very respectable and successful company (mostly women too,) and am shocked at the response. Am I overreacting? I know I could pump in the car, but that won't be a 15 minute thing b/ I'm right in the middle of the city and would want to go somewhere that's a little more private. I'm tempted not to go (they aren't paying me!) I've been nursing for almost 11 months and never got used to NIP.

Um no you are not over reacting. I would have to tell them no I'll need a more sanitary place to pump my babies food tyvm! You can totally tell them no and that you need to borrow someone's office or something.

I would tell them "I'm sorry, but I don't feel any bathroom is sanitary enough for me to be pumping and storing breast milk to feed my baby. I will really need an empty office or conference room or one that can become empty when I need to pump."
Or I would pump in the car, 11 years ago I pumped in the bathroom at my university for my first daughter, but we've come a long way in breastfeeding awareness and no one should be nursing or pumping in bathrooms nowadays.

I don't think you are overreacting at all. I'd talk to HR and tell them that pumping the food for your baby in a bathroom is not sanitary and that you'll need another spot.
Thank you for making me feel better! I'm definitely going to request a more sanitary place to pump and if they cannot offer me one, I'm going to leave at our lunchbreak. I just found out that we have to park in a parking garage several blocks away, so pumping in my car is no longer an option.

Check your state laws, there may be something in there that says your employer must offer you a place to pump that is NOT a restroom. La Leche Lague's website has a listing of the legislation in all states: http://www.llli.org/Law/LawBills.html
