I guess I was lucky or something. My kids have never said that to me, or that they hated me.

When my younger dd (3) doesn't get her way she'll start with the I hate yous. Every time she says that, dh or I tell her "I love you!" She gets so mad at us, but it doesn't take long for her to come running up to us telling us that she loves us. I feel kind of bad because I have a hard time not laughing because she is really pissed, but it helps to keep me calm when I've been struggling with her. Actually, the I hate yous are the easiest part of any struggle I have with her. (I use the word struggle, because she is so darned bull-headed that it can be a power struggle as to who is going to cave in first.)

I could have written that.
Rory has said it."I hate you" or "I don't like you" - We always say, "well, I love you and always will." or "that isn't a nice thing to say, I love you"
My 1st response to the OP though was "well you made it longer than we did" I think(hope) she is already outgrowing it.

DS has said that.
When he gets really mad he says, "I don't like you." and I respond, "You don't have to, but I love you."

I haven't gotten that one. The big one I get is "You're not FAIR!!!!" and "YOU always hurt my feelings" I tell her life isn't fair and I'm sorry your feelings are hurt but you still have to do X, Y or Z.

DS1 says we are "cheating" lol.
Stupid, duh, or shut up will never fly in our house. "I hate you" doesn't really pop up because we don't use the word hate. "I don't like you", well, that has popped up and he instantly feels bad. DS2 likes to tell us "Go" or "Moooooove" which we say, "Go, please" Now he has started saying, "Go peas" Somehow that even changes his tune...

Dd did the "I don't like you" too. After a month of "that's ok, I love you anyway" she dropped it.
