Ds is 7 months old. For the past 2 weeks, he's become very agitated. He wants mom to hold him all the time, but doesn't want to be held sitting down. He's refusing to take his naps, and may sleep for 30 min. at the longest. He's exhausted all the time, you can tell by the way he acts, but unless mom is nursing and holding him, he won't sleep. He's also been crying almost non-stop for the past 2 weeks. We have a dr appointment today, as I think there is something really wrong. I'm exhausted, and I don't know what else to do. I hate to let him CIO for naps, as it doesn't work for him. He'll stand himself up and scream while holding onto the bars of his crib. He sleeps with us at night, as he likes his boob to much, and I'd be up all night. I'm at the end of my ropes. He got his first tooth in 3 weeks ago, so I don't think that it's the tooth, but what could it be? Bowels are normal, nursing fine, and nothing that I can see is different. I'm a SAHM, so he sees me all the time, as well. I'm tired, and really need a break. Please help!

I think you are wise to take him to the doctor if it's been two weeks of this behavior. He may have an ear infection or something like that. It could also be teething. Sometimes after cutting a tooth another pops out shortly and he could be working on that. Has there been any change in his diet (started solids, new foods)? Perhaps something he is eating is upsetting his tummy and causing pain. I can understand what you are going through having a almost 11 month old as well as two boys 6 & 3. Good luck at the doctors. Let us know what they say.

If he got his first tooth 3 weeks ago, now it's time for the second tooth. when that one comes in, in a week or two it will be time for #3 and then #4. some babies handle the pain of teething very stoically, others seem to scream their heads off til they are done with the pain of teething. My 12 year old has been getting his adult teeth, and he's needed pain medicine quite often for the pain, and he's as big as I am!

when baby is crying out like that, and unconsoleable, a visit to the pediatrician is definitely in order. I've done two visits 3 days apart before because of this kind of thing. the first visit didnt' find anything out of the ordinary, the 2nd visit was enflamed ears and need for serious antibiotics. They can't talk and tell you what's wrong at that age, and MOST of the time there is a reason for their upset, you just have to play detective to find out what it is. I would NEVER use any kind of CIO or sleep training until I was sure that there were no medical issues, and no pain going on.

I agree that it still could be teething. DD has been popping out teeth one right after another, within a couple weeks time from each other. Luckly she's been handling it pretty well...with a little fussiness and frequent night waking. Tylonel has helped.

I hope you find something out today at the dr. and I hope things get easier for you soon!

I agree that you should be addressing teething relief, I had to give my DD1 Hylands AND motrin many nights, too many to count. Make sure if you are using Hylands, that you use the full recommended dosage, it seemed it didn't work unless we did. We also contacted www.hylands.com so we could up the dosage after a confirmation that she weighed more and needed more.

My babies always got teeth in clusters, having three or more erupting at once, causing considerable pain. Hang in there, nursin momma!

It turns out he did have an ear infection. He doesn't seem to respond to Hylands or Motrin/ Tylenol all that great. He's better now that he's on antibiotics. Thanks everyone!
