Does anyone have the link for the video that tells why kids need to stay rear facing as long as possible. It had a crash test to show the difference between a ff & rf car seat.

And is there any way to get my son back into a 5 pt safety harness without having to find $250 for a Britax Regent?

And is the 5 pt safety harness only good in the latch system? I had heard that the latch systems could fail, too. So seatbelt or latch?

Now I'm scared because of the videos I saw on youtube. :(

I'm scared too. Yes, there are def. cheaper seats out there. Hopefully our resident car seat experts will chime it.

Seatbelts are safer than latch.

See, that's what I heard, Sputter. Do you have any good links to back that up?

And should I be turning DS around RF again? It would mean moving my 3 month old to a side position instead of being in the center.

Thanks for the linky, Colleen.

When I was researching carseats for my son, I used Consumer Reports as my guide and in their tests some of the carseats completely failed when used with latch. I haven't researched that online, though.

I'd leave the baby in the middle.

Rear facing is safer even as an adult. So it would be safer, but he is 3. I'd rather have the super delicate baby in the middle if I had to choose.

I found this:
http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/safety/articles/119817/article.html "all parties agree that using any booster seat is better than using a seatbelt alone. PCPS research, for example, found that using a belt-positioning booster seat with a vehicle's lap and shoulder belts reduces the risk of injury for children ages 4 through 7 years by 59 percent, to less than 1.0 percent."

well, according to that seatbelts DO fail, so I feel much safer using the lower anchors in addition to the seatbelt.

EM, we have one of these as a spare seat. It's good up to 55lbs and doesn't cost a fortune.

IIRC, you should use one or the other, not both.

The Graco Nautilus is a great car seat that is 5 point harness up to 65 pounds. That is what Kenna is in.

I read both this info, and it seems that they are saying that both aren't necessary but don't cause harm either.

How old is he, how tall is he & how much does he weigh?

LATCH and Seatbelt are considered equally safe in the child passenger community. LATCH is sometimes easier, but all vehicles have LATCH limits, usually 40, 48 or 60 pounds. However, many carseats don't allow the use of LATCH past 48 pounds.

Consumer Reports doesn't crash test properly. They also don't have CPST's on staff or monitoring installs or anything... no one in the Child Passenger Safety community regards Consumer Reports as a reliable source of information.

Also, the general rule is to put the least protected person in the most protected position, if her oldest is forward facing and the baby is rear facing, the oldest should be center and the baby outboard.

No!

Seatbelts are safe, used properly. Lower anchors are safe, used properly. Using seatbelt and anchors together is NOT safe. Carseats are not designed to use the two systems together and doing so may make the seat respond to crash forces in ways it was not designed to and you don't want to find out firsthand what those are.
