At work tonight, a doc told a breastfeeding mom with mastitis to not nurse her kid. He said something about not to nurse because she would have to take Tylenol to deal with the pain. It is so hard to just sit back and do my job and not interfere. I wish more people were educated on BF.

It is so weird to me when I hear about doctors like that. I had mastitis with dd2, and the Dr made it very clear I needed to feed as often as possible. I told them I did not want a pain reliever, but she said it would have been safe either way. I guess I'm lucky to live where I do, or at least to go to the hospitals/doctors that I do.

Is Tylenol not okay to take when BFing.
I take it all the time, thats the only thing that help when I was having vasospasms.

Some Dr. are just not educated enough on BF. The formula reps. send them to conferences and host luncheons and dinners to educate them on their products but BM is free so LCs and BF coalitions don't have the money to have all these huge give aways to educate the Drs. We do what we can when we have the opportunity.
I am learning to step up and educate a Dr. when I hear him/her giving poor advice to a BF mom. I figure well if I get yelled at least I got my point across and the Dr. learns who I am.

There was a thread on another board I read where a mom asked why people chose formula. I read through it and over half were potentially from bad advice from their doctor. One was told she could only be treated for ppd if she weaned. One was told to pump and dump for 24 hours after a drink and ended up ruining her supply. Another was the mastitis thing. It made me sad.

That's too bad. I think that they should do like my Dr did and refer bfing mothers to an LC if their having any trouble.

My pedi was a bfing mom, so she is all for bfing beyond a year. My doctor on the other hand is getting an education from ME about bfing. He actually wanted me to stop bfing to take meds for a urinary tract infection. When I refused and said there are meds I can take that safe, he tried to prove me wrong and ended up admitting he had never heard of the med. I think some doctors just don't want to take the time to find an alternative to what they have been doing for years.
