Painful letdown/mer

I have been nursing for 4 weeks and this week I have started noticing some intense pain during letdown. It only lasts 10 seconds or so in both breasts, but it's enough to make me gasp every time. Any reason to be concerned?

Can you describe the pain? Many women experience this with a forceful let down. Do you have any other symptoms? Any yeast? Mastitis?

The pain feels like my breasts double in size all at once! The baby doesn't seem to mind but she occasionally pulls away while nursing, swallow, then reposition herself. I don't think I have a yeast problem, I would be able to see it in her mouth or on my nipples? My breasts feel warm after nursing and pumping, but no other pain or infection signs that I know of.

This is probably the refilling of the ducts that you are experiencing. It is a fullness and pressure sensation. Some women experience a feeling of pins-and-needles and a tingling sensation with let down. It should improve with time.
