i have a 1 month old(today) who was born 6lb13oz... was just weighed today and only 6lb3oz... the doctor told me to attempt to supplement.. (give 2oz and if he drinks it to continue to do that) i'm really not wanting to supplement.. could it be my supply and if so should i take something like fenugreek? other than his lack of weight gain the doc's not concerned about him at all.. when i suggested to him about the fenugreek or reglan he said no...

I must say that I am also concerned about your baby's weight being under birth weight at one month of age. Right now, the most important thing is to feed your baby.

Working on your milk supply can be done and hopefully you can fully provide your Breastmilk at a future time, but giving immediate attention to feeding the baby is the concern right now.

If you do not want to give bottles, you can use a Supplemental Nurser at the breast with the supplement.

How has your baby's nursing pattern been over the last month? Do you ever pump? Do you feel your supply is low? Has your baby been peeing and pooping?

There can be certain medical conditions that prevent a baby from gaining weight, so we wouldn't want to blame it on breastfeeding if some other underlying problems exist.

This is where a local IBCLC can help you. She can do a thorough history and discuss your options and teach you how to wean safely off the formula once your milk volumes are increasing. She can also assess your current milk supply status and discuss medications and herbs for increasing your supply.

I do have an instruction sheet that I can attach to an email for you on Increasing Your Milk Supply. Email me from my website www.motheringfromtheheart.com and request it, then I'll reply back and attach.

Do you have a Breastpump? You will need one while giving the supplements.
