I have an Oreck that I love. The only thing I dont like about it is that it doesnt have any attachments to do the stairs with.
I also have a cheap little vacuum that I love for using on the wood floors and my furniture. Its really small and light and it becomes a hand-held by taking the detatchable stick out. It think it was only $20 and has great suction. I cant remember what kind it is though.

I have a Eureka bagless. It cost me 160 and I really like it. It picks up dirt and hair awesome. I use it only on my one area rug and the rug by my back door and I have to empty the cannister like once a month. ( I can't believe that much dirt gets tracked onto my rugs.)
Plus it has an attachment for pet hair and a spin duster on it that works pretty well.
I would love to have a dyson or a kirby but we are too poor for that.
I have had this one 2 years(one of those years we had all carpet this year we have hardwood.)

Nothing beats my Electrolux!
WTB I have an orek too... it was expensive and I have the same gripe about having no attachments! But otherwise no complaints!
Hamm I was looking into buying a Dyson... I absolutely cannot afford it now... but I am jealous! It works well?

Swifter is the best for hardwood. It is amazing!!! I never use a broom anymore. Ever.

The Eureka's are rating quite well for the money.
I am not shelling out a few hundred for a vacuum, so we might go the Eureka route.

Yeah it works great. My Mom has a Kirby. She vacuumed with hers and then I came behind her and vacuumed with mine. I had the canister filled up before I was even done with the living room. it was disgusting. Her Kirby couldn't hold a candle to my Dyson.

I had a Hoover Windtunnel for 8 years that I thought worked great - no complaints other than it was a huge PITA to clean my stairs. In general, I needed something a little more back friendly.
I bought a Dyson DC17 Animal in May to replace my WT. It has a telescoping wand so I don't have to haul the actual vacuum up the stairs to vacuum them.
I LOVE this vacuum. 3 months later I still cannot believe the crap coming out of my carpets. I thought it would be extra hairy and dusty for a few vacuums, but it's still coming. So, 8 years of thinking my WT was working when really all it was doing was vacuuming up the surface dirt.
The mini-turbine attachment cleans my stairs like a charm. The telescoping wand works great. It's even got an attachment to vacuum my curtains (uh, lots of dust there too!) and a dusting wand for surface cleaning (costs extra).
Oh! And it works great for vacuuming my tile floors. I just turn the rotating brush off and it picks everything up instead of blowing the dirt around the floor.

I dunno what mine is, I think it is a Dirt Devil that my MIL bought several years ago and hated because it was heavy. She paid over $300 for it at the time. When I need a new vacuum, I will spend the money to rip up my carpet instead and put hard floors down.

My parents have had a Kirby for 25 years. Still works great.
We have a Hoover Fusion. It's a tough vacuum. A table fell on it, and it still worked. We did buy another one eventually. Our local Kirby dealer was selling refurbished vacuums, and they had a Fusion, so we got it for $20 (it was originally 150, I think). You might check and see if there's a place near you that sells refurbs. They're usually a really good value if you're looking to save money.
