I am a member of Milkshare.com...it's a Yahoo group for informal milk donations. If you need breast milk, you can post. If you have excess milk to donate, you can post.

The following was a posting on there today. What the hell does being "Chrystian" have to do with it? Is it a general understanding that if you're Chrystian, you don't smoke or drink alcohol???? I do believe in a higher power and sometimes it's God. I just don't understand what your particular faith has to do with the quality of your breast milk.

Here is the posting (in bold):

Hello, I am from Virginia and I will like to donate milk. I only drink
Pernatal vitamins and Synthroid which is not harmful for the babys. I
am Chrystian so I do not drink alcohol bevareges or smoke. I have a lot
of frozen milk and my baby is only 15 weeks, so I make more than what
she needs.

Interesting. I think the faith part in there just throws me off balance. I'm sorry, it just rubs me the wrong way even though the best intentions are there. (I am always glad to hear of women who are donating their milk to someone else in need, don't get me wrong.)

I don't know. I saw that one too. Ever since the group has gotten some mention in magazines, there have been some real crazies on the list.

And now moms are wanting doctor's notes, copies of birth certificates?? Yikes. I'm glad that I'm no longer seeking.

And honestly, I don't think I would want milk from that particular mom. I don't think I would trust that she has handled, stored and shipped the milk appropriately.

Kerry- I agree. That group has some very interesting postings on it. I would not trust milk from the poster in my original post.

I am very meticulous in my milk handling and storing...everything about how I get it to the storage bag is very meticulous. I think I have some OCD with milk handling/storage ONLY because I know that my frozen milk will eventually go to someone in need.

I put love and care into the handling/storage as well as making sure everything is cleaned every day. I put my time and effort into pumping and it's certainly not to profit off of it. The big profit to me is knowing that I have helped someone in need (and trusting that they are indeed using the milk for their baby):)

(I "know" it will go to someone in need because DD does not drink the frozen stash, we've never had to use our frozen stash.)

Speaking of handling the milk meticulously. I once got a shipment from a mom who froze her milk in ice cube trays, then dumped the cubes into a gallon-sized ziplock bags. She sent me 4-6 of these gallon ziplock bags full of breastmilk cubes. Unfortunately, the milk started to thaw (as it tends to do, no big deal as long as it's still slushy when it arrives), and the inside of the cooler was a dripping milky mess. She did not double bag the ziplock bags. So I threw the bags into the freezer to refreeze, but because they had already started to thaw, now I have big solid blocks of frozen breastmilk that's pretty much impossible to use. I've got them in the freezer to use as last resort if I run out of all my other milk.

Neither would I. She doesn't seem very intelligent. Either that or she is not
"real".

I'm with Hamm, is she even real???

Yes, I questioned her authenticity as well.

I had one woman who offered me milk whose story didn't really add up and I had a bad gut feeling about her. It seems weird, though - why would someone lie about GIVING milk? I can understand lying about wanting milk, but not giving it. Nevertheless, I've learned to listen to my gut, and I politely declined.

I don't know much about private donation. Is it just good faith that you take the milk (that the person has no risk factors)?

Oh, and yes, the posting is woefully ignorant, but likely well-meaning. The spelling is bizarre, though. Does a site like that get a lot of troll type posting?

Oh, and I know Christians that drink and non-Christians that don't drink. Shrug.

Each person has their own comfort level. I request copies of prenatal lab records that show negative for Hep B and HIV.

I know people that introduce themselves as..."hi My name is ______ and I am a Christian." I don't see anything wrong with that in general....but that post is odd. The spelling is crap and so is the grammer...it seems off to me.

It looks to me as though it was written by a person who speaks another language better than English, and I personally know people who would find comfort in receiving milk from a fellow believer.

That said, I also found the ad off-putting.

I am the only one who laughed at the irony (bold mine)? "lol9"

Seriously, wrt to the OP, who can't spell Christian? Especially a follower of Chryst? WTF?

Camille- you are funny!

I need to find a new home for some milk in my freezer! I'll have to re-post on Milkshare and see what comes up.

I'd love to find someone local, well- here in WI, and avoid shipping. I don't know that I'd trust receiving milk (if I was on the receiving end of donor milk) off of Craigslist. Someone on Milkshare had a bunch of donated milk that they were using for their baby and they got the milk off of Craigslist.
