I am 33 wks preg w/ my second. I breastfed my 1st for 1 month. We had bad latch on issues and I was using a nipple sheild. My son did not gain wt and was 2 oz under birth wt at 1 month of age. I was so exhausted with the 12-14 feedings a day (plus pumping) that at one month I quit, so dissappointed in the whole BF experience. I had meant to go a year.....I still feel really bad about the whole thing. I want to try again, but what can be done with the flat/ inverted nipples? I think they are a little better now after having my first, but still flat. I could never pump more than an oz at a time, I've heard about the shells do they help?

Did you work with a lactation consultant with your first?
I have found that even with flat nipples, if the nipples are compressible, it's quiet possible to latch baby to breast without the shield. Remember, your baby doesn't know you have flat nipples. It would be a good idea to avoid all artificial teats if you had this problem before.
Also, working with a lactation consultant, if you should need a shield, can ensure that you are using the correct size nipple shield, the correct type, and how to correctly use it over your nipple.
The concept behind the shells is that they place just enough pressure over the nipple to help stretch the bands around the nipple which can help bring the nipple out. You wear the shells inside your bra. They can help. If you want to try them, I prefer the soft shells.
Hope this helps,
Assunta
