Milk is always being made so even if you pumped your breast for a few minutes, I would allow your baby to nurse directly on the breast. If you pump for 30 minutes and feel you have your breast fairly empty, then it would be best to pump after you have nursed your baby.

I doubt you want to get into a pumping and bottle feeding pattern.

If you need to pump due to your breast feeling full and your baby is not emptying you well, then pump enough to soften the breast. If a baby doesn’t finish a feed, then it is common for them to want to go back to the breast shortly after a nursing session.

If you want to pump milk to obtain a storage supply for a future return to work, then take advantage of pumping early in the morning where most women’s supplies are the fullest. Later in the day, supplies may be lower and it will be best to nurse exclusively at that time. Using Avent’s Isis Comfort Breast Shells can allow you to save the leaking and spraying milk that occurs when you are nursing from the opposite breast. I’ve had moms report to me that they were able to collect ½ to 1 1/2 oz per feed. This can be a big help when stocking up a supply in the freezer. This doesn’t even require using a Breastpump.
