I've been breastfeeding on demand since my baby was born 3 and a half weeks ago, but I haven't been able to give him more than an ounce per feeding (1/2 ounce per breast), and I feed him 8-12 times a day for 15-20 minutes each side. His latch appears to be good, and I'm using breast compression. Because I'm not producing enough milk, I am supplementing him too. I'm using fenugreek, blessed thistle, oatmeal, and pumping after feeding using the Medela Symphony. I'm also weighing him after each feeding to see if any of my home remedies are working.

My baby seems to be getting frustrated at the breast. He's started crying/whining while nursing.

Is there anything else that you would recommend I try?

You didn’t mention how you were giving the supplements. Are you using bottles or the Supplemental Nurser?

If your baby is frustrated at the breast, it could be due to low milk volumes, but it may also be related to receiving bottles. If you used an SNS, it might keep your baby from becoming frustrated while nursing as you can control the flow of the supplement. It can also provide more suckling time for your baby at the breast. Here is a link to the SNS if you want more information: http://motheringfromtheheart.com/catalog/58supplemental%20nurser.htm

Contact me directly from my website www.motheringfromtheheart.com and request my detailed instruction sheet on Increasing Your Milk Supply. There may be a few suggestions that may help you in addition to what you are using.
