i think i have a mastitis.. or clogged duct or something. it all started late last week when i thought i felt a little lump on the right side.. then yesterday after visiting with family 3 hours away i started to feel icky... sore throat, achy muscles, then when i got home took my temp had a low grade fever ranging from 99.8 to 100.2... didn't really think too much of it til this afternoon when the baby seemed like he didn't even really like his favorite side and i was having to give him more supplements than i have had too recently.. now i sit here with a slightly red right breast... with a make shift hot compress on it.. wondering who do i call the OB or the primary doctor.. i know keep nursing and pumping.. take some ibuprofen for pain.. and hot compresses but if anyone has anything else that could make it a little more comfortable that would be great!
TIA

I think you had a clogged duct that turned into mastitis. I would see your OB.
When you nurse, massage your breast towards the nipple. Not very comfortable at the time but should help work things out!

thank you very much... i think what helped it happen were a few things.. one that nipple was a little cracked... and the right one is a little bigger than the left and it's on the side that my hand doesn't reach when doing compressions.. have been trying to purposely massage that side while nursing but apparently i didnt' do so well...

take it! the sooner you start the sooner you will feel better.
when I had mastitis (three times in the first few weeks), my husband would massage the knot for me while I nursed or pumped. It was horribly painful, but it worked and got it cleared up.
I hope you are feeling better soon!

Run, don't walk to a NEW Doctor! Seriously, I wouldn't take a medication prescribed by a Dr. so lax.

I agree with Mamacita. I have mastitis 2 times due to plugged ducts. I know it's very uncomfortable, but you really should be seen by a Dr. Dr will put you on an antibiotic. What kind of meds did your doc prescribe? I hope you feel better quickly. Get LOTS of rest.

ok.. picked up prescription.. its an antibiotic.. dicloxacillin.. from the paper i got from the pharmacy its from the penicillin family.. and the pharmacist said that it's a class B for pregnancy so she didnt' see a reason why i couldn't take it while breast feeding... but if anyone has any other info that i should be concerned about please let me know...
already went to kellymom.com and it's not even listed at all..
thanks

My Dr called that in for me also when I called the nurse and talked with her about my symptoms. I had mastitis. It really helped me!!

I think that is what I took when I had it. I would keep a warm rice sock in my bra, it helped a lot. Warm, wet compresses help a lot too. The rice sock was just easy at work, because I couldn't have a giant wet spot in my shirt.

I would go ahead and take the antibiotic because, I don't think mastitis is something to fool around with. But I would still find a new OB, one that will see you.
A rice sock is a tube sock filled with rice and tied off at one end. You can pop it in the microwave for a minute or 2 and it will make a nice heat pack.
