My nipples and areola are bright red! They turn red whenever I nurse my six-month-old in any position other than laying down. I went to see a lc yesterday, and she suggested I try an asymetrical latch instead of a straight on latch. I did that three times yesterday. When I talked to the lc, my nipples were almost back to being normal coloured. By the end of the day, yesterday, I could see through a white t-shirt that my nipples were bright red! And they hurt!!! My nipples aren't cracked, dry, or bleeding. I don't think I have mastitis because the redness goes away after a couple days of bfing while laying down. I don't mind have to bf while laying down, it's my favourite position, but it's impractical if I need to bf while I'm out of my house.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried the football hold?

There is only pain at the end of the day whenever I bf sitting up. I don't feel pain while I'm bfing. Which is a relief, to say the least. But the pain at the end of the day can be almost unbearable if I've bf in the cradle position more than once.
I have only done the football position one time on one side. It's a little difficult to do since my baby's so big. But maybe I should try it on both sides a couple times to see how it works.

I HAVE FIGURED OUT WHAT IS WRONG!!! I haven't been holding up my baby while he's bfing! I had been letting my arms relax too much, so he was pulling on my nipples. The pulling was what was making me red. I'm just relieved to have discovered what was going on and now I know what to do to prevent it from happening again:)

Good to hear that you figured it out. Easier to fix the problem. Good luck.
