View Full Version : Donating my BM...

I make a lot of milk! I mean A LOT of milk. My LC has helped me cut down some on the supply, but I still make a ton. I have to pump while I'm at work so I usually pump 3 times (during a 9 hour shift) and I come home with AT LEAST 20 oz of milk...but usually more like 24 oz. My freezer is JAMMED full of BM because my DD has taken to reverse cycling and doesn't really eat more then 3 or 4 oz while I'm away. I can hardly stand the thought of throwing it all out, and I've read in other threads about some of you ladies donating your BM. I would love to do that! It breaks my heart that some moms have such a difficulty producing enough milk for their wee ones. I think it would be a wonderful gift to donate some of my milk to a baby or two in need. So basically my question is, what do I have to do to donate? I've researched and found some places on line, but which are reputable? Any in put would be much appreciated. Thanks!

See the link in my sigline to a website for private donation.

LMK if you have any questions (I've been a recipient, rather than a donor).

Another option is to donate to a non-profit milk bank. You can find a milk bank by going to www.hmbana.org

I've donated through the private website Kerry has suggested. Its easy and a rewarding thing to do for another mommy in need.

I've donated through nationalmilkbank too. They took some of the frozen milk too, which helped empty some of my freezer.

Just so people are aware, the National Milk Bank sends their milk to Prolacta a FOR PROFIT business. They make profit off women's milk donations. For some women, that may be fine. But I know many women want their milk to be DONATED, not sold, to babies in need. HMBANA milk banks are all non-profit, and of course private donation through milkshare.com does not allow the selling of milk either.

Have you tried your local Hospital? They should be able to help you out locally if you wanted that.

I might be wrong on this...but do local hospitals take donor milk that is not from a milk bank? I thought they used donor milk from a milk bank that has been pasteurized.

No, local hospitals will not take direct milk donations. It needs to come from a milk bank.
