There are five women using the lactation "pumping" room where I work. I am the only one that ever has a problem.
Last time the fire alarm went off I was pumping and had to quickly "put myself away", pack up my stuff (wasn't leaving it there!) and get out of the building.
Today I had just sat down and pulled my shirt up, and bra cups down- didn't have the horns in place yet- when a maintenance man barged in the room. So I was just sitting there with the girls hanging out.....fun, fun!
There isn't a lock on the door. There is a receptionist that sits a few feet outside the door and would normally stop people before they get that far.... not sure where she was this morning!

LOL it can be trying pumping at work. I was walked in on a few times too. Then I insisted on getting a lock for the door and they did it for me.

From now on I am just going to turn the chair around and move it in front of the door. Much more inconvenient (no table nearby) and the chair I will be using is not nearly as comfy, but I will deal with it.

Lol.
I always worried that the fire alarm would go off while I was pumping.

Yeah maybe a sign...or could you pump in one chair and use the another chair (or something else) to put up against the door so it can't be opened?
Thats gotta suck..!! I'm sorry.
I do have my own office to pump in which is nice...but one time during a bad storm the power went out. Thank God for my cordless pump...but I was sitting there in the dark pumping...people knocking on my door, are you ok and then laughing (I work in an office full of women so they know exactly what im doing lol).

I have my own office too, but I have to pump in the car sometimes, so I would just drap a blanket over me when I did that. It works really well

going back to work next weekend.. i'm a nurse... and i was told what they do is give the mother who's nursing the key to the supervisors office.. so not only will i have a room that's locked but i will also be the only one with the key when i'm in there! YAY!!!!!!!!
i think the suggestion about the sign on the door would be a good idea.. especially since there are more than 1 of you nursing in the office... maybe make it really pretty and you can hang it on the door or doorknob... then not only will everyone else know that there is someone in there but each of you would know too.. you could leave it in the room or something so all of you can use the sign..
can't always rely on the receptionist to be at her desk...

We have used signs before, no one bothers to read them. There is another room in the basement with a keyed lock and a sign, and yet maintenance people have walked in on other mom's down there.... they just use their keys and go right in.

That's funny. I had my own office when I was pumping (actually I still have my own office). I also had a sign to let people know I was available by phone, e-mail, or talking through the door. There were many days when I'd need to pump at the same time a meeting was scheduled. I'd end up in my office, two doors down from the meeting, participating in the meeting by phone. They'd always laugh when I took my phone off mute b/c they could here the pump going. Ah good times, good times ...
The only time someone came in was when my General Manager was visiting, and wanted a cup of tea. Since he knows I keep a large stash of a variety of teas he knocked on my door to ask if he could have a bag. I said sure, let me cover myself up, and pulled my shirt down over the apparati. He had to get a key from someone else to unlock my door. I guess since his wife had pumped for both of their children he didn't think it was a big deal.

I am a teacher, and I get the joy of pumping in my classroom:)
Thanks to the safety drills we did last year, I know exactly where I can sit so that no one can see me from the outside wall of windows or from my door window. (Basically where can we hide the students in case someone was attacking the school).
I pump at lunch and lock my door and put a note on my door that i am not to be disturbed. Most of the people I work with know what i am doing, but I still have this fear that a kid will forget lunch money and come by, see locked door and get someone who has a key and they won't read sign, and well... you see where I am going:)
Hopefully I can manage the length of time I'd like to nurse without embarrassment of that magnitude:)

That sucks. I remember when DS had to stay in the hospital 4 extra days after his birth. Trying to BF him with all the nurses, techs, etc. walking in and out was not fun, especially since we had such a rough start at it.

My thoughts on this are someone needs to notify the maintence supervisor that they continually do this, it could be "an accident" but repeat offenders should be addressed...if a sign is present they should notice...you just never know people can get strange "kicks" out of walking in on you...

I was thinking the same thing. That they probably know exactly what is going on in there and would like to get a peek. I am sure that your company doen't want to get into a sexual harrassment case or something because they couldn't see a stupid sign.

Be thankful that you have an official place to pump. I will be in the bathroom at my work, as there is no place besides that, that is private.

In the hospital I was the brazen mother who latched baby on no matter who was there and didn't bother with modesty. I think I embarassed a cafeteria delivery person or two.
