My baby is 2 months old and he usually spits up a bit after breastfeeding. Twice today his spit up has had some brownish-looking blood spots in it. One of my nipples has a little crack/scab and I am wondering if I am bleeding a bit when he is nursing and that is what he is spitting up. I'd figure if it were his blood it would be really red and look fresh. Do I need to take him to the Dr.?
Hi....the spitting up amongst babies is quite often normal, some reasons this may happen can include when baby gets too much milk too fast, or when the baby feeds very quickly/aggressively.
This could quite possibly be the case as you mentioned. You'll want to treat the sore/cracked nipple and it might also be a good idea to get the latch checked again, a 'not so good' latch can cause this. To be on the safe side it might be a good idea to mention this to your caregiver in order for him to make sure there is no other issue going on.
