I need to find some way to bring in some money. What is the typical pay in a retail situation? I would need to keep flexible hours as I am dd's only caretaker during the week and I would not likely be able to make enough do something like this to pay for care.
I need ideas.

It depends on where you live, big town/small town, etc. In a large city, 5 years ago, I made $8.35 after the shift difference for working o/n. I applied at the same store, same postion, but in a smaller town and they only wanted to pay me a little over minimum wage. 3 years ago, in a large city working in a bakery for Kroger's, again I only made a little over minimum wage, but they wre unionized.

retail around here is minimum wage. However, there are a lot of places hiring seasonaly, like customer service type places, and factory places. You are more likley to make more money in places like that.

Thanks, for minimum wage we would simply not bring in enough to cost dh the research time so it really has to be worthwhile. I also need to look into the WAH ideas. That would make anything I could do while looking after dd would be simply income and not cost us, that is the biggest issue.

What about ChaCha? Someone said if you were fast enough, you can make up to $1000 or more a month, just googling answers for people.

It depends on where you live, cost of living, minimum wage there etc. You might be better off at a restaurant being a hostess or something so you can get some tips.

Here, at Lands' End, peak employees (phones) are started out at $11.35/hour.

Is there a Container Store near you? They are always at the top of Fortune Magazines 100 best companies to work for. They work around moms with school kids schedules and give full benefits to part time employees including a matching 401K, health, vision, and dental.

I think Starbucks does all of this for part time employees too.

I have been in retail now for a little over two years. I know part of it is that I am in a very poorly organized/managed store..but really. I am constantly stressed out all the time. You really need to have excelent customer service skills, and be able to deal with people screaming, swearing, bitching, and complaining at you for things that are not your fault, and you have nothing to do with. You have to always have a smile on your face, and be cheerful when you have difficult people demanding things constantly for you. You have to deal with people treating you like you are low class and not worth their time because you are in retail.
I normally can sail through all of this with a smile on my face, but some days its just too much, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Mrs. Kitty, have you thought about working retail in a bigger store where they have a separate return desk, like a Target? In those kinds of stores the cashier/floor people don't have to deal with as many disgruntled people, the return desk gets the brunt of it.

No, it can't be done from home at the moment.

If I needed to make some good money with flexible hours, I would look for a job waiting tables at a family owned or higher end restaurant. You don't have to deal with the chain crap and can make some really good money if you're good at it. It's not easy, and it's not always fun, but it is good money.

We pay part time employees $13 per hour plus 2% commission and bonuses for special events. Our employees have extremely flexible schedules.
You should consider looking for a smaller, private business that needs holiday help over a large corporation. You're more likely to get paid more adn you'll surely avoid red tape.

Not interested :) I am working till I have the baby so I can collect my year of maternity leave, and never working retail again. I will be doing night school while I am on mat leave.
