View Full Version : It's a woodstove and chili kind of day...

It feels like the beginning of winter. I hope it holds off a bit longer for our roof to go on.

Today I wrapped the little fruit trees with corn stalks. I also did up the dishes and laundry, happy that the water was back on from yesterday.

I made a pot of veggie bean soup for our workers and a pot of chili for us. I've stoked the stove and the house is toasty.

All I need now is a good book.

How is your weather?

Beach weather (85), but a little windy. Unfortunately, I have to sleep all day, and DH hates the beach. He and the kids will probably be inside watching cartoons all day.

I'm jealous...I'd love a few days of winter.

It's rainy, windy, and cold. We've got our woodstove going as well. I've got piles and piles of laundry to do today (it seems like for every load I do three or four takes its place). DH has to run some fence to prepare for the horses, who come Monday. The kids are playing, somewhat contentedly, in the playroom.

I'm working on knitting Holden some socks.

Chili sounds delicious and I hope the workers can get your roof on quickly.

nicurn, I'd love your weather for just one month. After that, winter can come. LOL!

Sasha, fortunately it's not been rainy here. We're rather lucky that the project started after the Fall rains. The socks sound great. I'm crocheting a scarf for dc4.

It's cold here! We lived in a super old house when I was young and our only heat source was a pot belly stove. I loved that thing.

Not too bad, we've had a little high pressure going through, keeping the temps in the 60's for highs.

It's going to drop down into the 50's and 40's (or colder!) for highs in a couple of weeks when the cold winter temps officially set in. Looking forward to some snow. Our first good snowstorm came the first weekend of Dec last year.

Oh and I made chili yesterday and had some for breakfast this morning!

It's our last sunny kinda warm day. We're in the upper 60s then dropping to to a high of 50 tomorrow. We're taking advantage of playing outside today :)

I'm ready for winter and wish we would get snow, not likely but I can always wish. We may need to head to the mountains for a weekend to get a snow fix.

Was hoping for another snow day but oh well, it was nice to see the big ole flakes yesterday. It's been *winter* for a little while.

Sun came up a little after 9am and will go back down shortly after 4pm. The days are growing shorter and shorter each day. I think it's about 25 degrees in my neck of the woods. Usually when the sun drops, so does the temp. I'm still wearing just a fleece jacket. :)

Our weather is similar to yours I think. It is very sunny and fairly cold. We've kept the woodstove going for about a month now and I just split another cord yesterday. Winter will be upon us before long. Get your roof on!

We had a wood stove as our sole source of heat growing up in the foothills of the Appalachians. I miss it. We're talking about installing one in the next year or two, but don't know if we'll bother since it doesn't get that cold where I live now except for some overnights. I sure would like to have one, though. I love the idea of being able to set a big ol' pot of soup, stew or sauce up there and let it simmer as well as having a neverending supply of hot coffee.

Update: DH took the kids to their favorite park, so even though they didn't get to the beach, they did get out to have some fun! Hooray!

There is something primal about a fire. I like the idea that you get out of it exactly what you put into it. Sometimes, like right now, I love to put wood on the fire until the whole house is toasty. Other times, I just want one room that is warm in an otherwise cold house. I wish I were clever enough to actually put a coffee pot on instead of just boiling water to make steam.

I read somewhere that there's actually a chemical reaction in the brain when people smell woodsmoke. Like there is some kind of primal, age-old recognition of life-giving fire.

It's pretty cool.

I love the woodstoves, except one. I would never have bought such a thing! The wood stands on end instead of laying down. You have to reach way down in to light anything (watch your arm hairs). It starts a huge paper fire, but then fizzles out. The other stoves are so much easier to work with!

As far as the roof goes, all exterior walls are up. One main beam is up. I expect internal walls to go up today and the trusses (sp?) to go up next week. We're truckin' right along.

I get stuck with the crappy jobs. Today I have to lacquer a floor. I have a head cold and I'm dreading the fumes!!! No lighting the woodstove for a while.

I have 2 favorite woodstoves. One is large and has an oven. The other is small, with feet. The shape of the glass is so pretty.

In the one with the oven, I make soups/stews in earthenware pots as well as bread and pizza. Delicate things can't be baked in there, but if you watch the temperature, most things can.
