I dunno. SIL is cooking, and I've never really eaten her food before. DH is making rolls, but I'm just showing up, since I work the night before and Thanksgiving night.

"Orange Bourbon Turkey"

I think that I need the recipe for that!

Here you go- (I bake a 20-21 pounder. I eyeball extra bourbon and juice, I also use Simply Orange juice - not oranges.)

1 (12-pound) fresh or frozen whole turkey, thawed
2 cups fresh orange juice (about 6 oranges)
1 cup water
3/4 cup bourbon, divided
1/3 cup molasses
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
4 oranges, peeled
Cooking spray
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Orange slices (optional)
Flat-leaf parsley sprigs (optional)

Preparation
Remove giblets and neck from turkey; discard. Rinse turkey thoroughly with cold water; pat dry. Combine orange juice, water, 1/2 cup bourbon, and molasses in a 2-gallon heavy-duty zip-top plastic bag; add turkey. Seal and marinate in refrigerator 4 to 24 hours, turning bag occasionally. Remove turkey from bag, reserving marinade.

Preheat oven to 350°.

Tie ends of legs with cord. Lift wing tips up and over back, and tuck under bird. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon salt into body cavity. Stuff cavity with oranges. Place turkey on a broiler pan coated with cooking spray or on a rack set in a shallow roasting pan. Insert meat thermometer into meaty part of thigh, making sure not to touch bone. Bake at 350° for 3 hours or until thermometer registers 180°. (Cover turkey loosely with foil if it gets too brown.) Remove turkey from oven. Cover turkey loosely with foil; let stand at least 10 minutes before carving. Discard oranges.

Pour reserved marinade into a saucepan; bring to a boil. Skim foam from mixture with a slotted spoon; discard. Reduce heat to medium; cook until reduced to 3 1/2 cups (about 15 minutes). Combine 1/4 cup bourbon and flour in a small bowl, stirring well with a whisk. Add to reduced marinade; bring to a boil, and cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Stir in 1/4 teaspoon salt. Serve sauce with turkey. Garnish with orange slices and parsley sprigs, if desired.

With my family we will be eating at our country club, so whatever they have on the menu is what we will be having.

With dh's family, probably the usual fare of turkey, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, mash potato, corn bread and a soup of some sort with a green salad and rolls.

We usually go to our Mumsy's for Thanksgiving and she makes Turkey, potatoes, green beans, stuffing, sweet potato pie, and then Mil makes pumpkin pie and brings the rolls, she also makes candied yams, oh yeah, gravy, deviled eggs, and I usually make something. I brought pumkin pie cheesecake one year, last year I made some Delish monkey bread for everyone to take home. hmmm... I feel like I'm forgetting something.

No Thanksgiving for us this year. I'll be spending it with my Mom in the hospital as she recovers from cancer surgery.

Maybe I can use some of these menu ideas for next year. :)

Still Me, can you share your Amish stuffing recipe please? And the oatmeal pie too?

:D They are top secret recipes....like top secret at the bakery. lol We buy the oatmeal pie. It is delicious! The Amish stuffing is "made" by my sister's MIL, but this is how it is done.

Amish Dressing (what some call stuffing)
http://www.yumyum.com/recipe.htm?ID=20287

Amish Dressing Ingredients:

2 1 pound loaves good quality
-bread, cut in 1/2" cubes
-(about 4 quarts)
2 lb Poached chicken thighs
1/2 c Minced fresh parsley
3/4 c Chopped onions
1 c Chopped celery
1 c Shredded carrot
1 1/4 c Finely chopped boiled
-potatoes
1 T Rubbed sage
1 T Celery seed
1 t Dried thyme
1/2 t Turmeric
5 Eggs
1 12 ounce can evaporated
-milk
2 1/2 c Homemade chicken broth or
-canned
Amish Dressing Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 F.
On 2 cookie sheets, toast the bread cubes for 15 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown.
Transfer to a large mixer bowl.
Bone the chicken and very finely chop the meat, discarding the skin.
Add the chopped vegetables and chicken meat to the bread, along with the seasonings.
Toss In a medium bowl, beat the eggs; add the evaporated milk and broth.
Pour over the bread mixture and blend.
The mixture will be quite moist.
Allow to stand 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
Transfer the dressing to an oiled 3-quart glass casserole that is 10 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep.
(At this point dressing can be frozen for future use; thaw before baking).
Bake dressing for 2 hours, or until the center of the dressing puffs up and is golden brown on top.
Serve it with fried chicken and lots of chicken gravy to ladle over the top.

Amish Oatmeal Pie
http://www.recipelink.com/mf/2/19672
AMISH OATMEAL PIE

"Oatmeal Pie is a classic dessert amoung the Amish and Mennonites in northern Indiana. It is likened to a budget version of pecan pie, which isn't fair, it is certainly good enough to stand on its own. This version has a rich delicate bottom custard and a top rather like a chewy oatmeal cookie. I like to add a bit of orange to this, but that is not traditional."

1 prebaked (9-inch) pie shell
4 eggs
1 cup sugar
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup light corn syrup
2 tbsp butter, melted
1 tsp grated orange rind (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup uncooked 1-minute quick oatmeal, uncooked

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Set out the pie shell.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until frothy.

Combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl. Add to the beaten eggs and blend. Add the corn syrup, melted butter, orange rind, and vanilla and blend again. Mix in the oatmeal, and pour into the baked pie shell.

Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool completely and serve at room temperature.

Just thinking about this today. This year the first Sunday of Advent falls in the same weekend so I am trying to plan both meals so that stuff does not overlap. This is what I have so far:

TGing:

Ettouffe
Ham
scalloped potatoes
green bean casserole
sweet potato souffle
cranberry something (not sure yet)
chocolate bread pudding

Advent (formal multi-course meal that I ONLY do once a year)
Fish course-smoked salmon pasta dish with a sherry cream sauce
Soup-either parsnip or sweet potato/ginger soup
Oyster course-spinach, mushroom, garlic and goat cheese souffle
Skipping the aspic because I think it's foul
Game course-muscouvy duck breasts with something (not sure yet)
Salad-baby greens with goat cheese, blackberry vinegerette with grilled pears and pecans
Roast course-boneless leg of lamb with grilled veggies
fruit and cheese
dessert (maybe more bread pudding because it's easy to make two at once)
