Do not leave your children with people who live in homes with pools. Not even if they are your parents. If you must, then do so only if the pool is enclosed, and personally check the enclosure to make sure it is locked, not just latched. Don't think it will be safe as long as it's "only for __ amount of time" because it only takes 5 minutes of inattention for brain damage to occur.

There is no such thing as a safe pool, but there are ways to make them less risky.

I agree.

What brought this on?

More than one loving grandparent now devastated because they lost track of a beloved toddler for "just a few minutes" and lived in a home with a pool.

More than one this week.

I have one of those little blue-ring pools with the filter that you can get at Walmart for $100 with the little filter, etc. (you know the ones) and DS has loved having it the last 2 years during the summer, but now that we have DD, I do not plan on putting it up the next 3 years at least until DD can either swim or is tall enough to stand in it. DS will miss it - we'll just have to make time to go to the beach more - but I just can't imagine having that outside unless we enclosed the entire thing with a fence and the worry of DD getting out there just for a second.

My sister lives with my mom, who has an endless pool. Her DD is 17 months old. I have told them a couple times to PLEASE make sure they NEVER for even a second leave the top off. There is a deck that goes right up to the edge of it and her DD LOVES going in it. Scares the crap out of me!

So sad. :(

We have an inflatable pool. It only gets set up right before we use it, and we always dump it when we're done. Not once have we left it set up overnight.

When we were home shopping we saw one house with a pool and at least 3 with hot tubs.

All I saw when I thought back to those homes was my child, floating face down in the water.

I refuse to have any type of standing water (pool, hot tub etc), until my youngest child has common sense, an ability to swim, and can easily stand with head above the water.

I also could never do your job (((((hugs)))))
