My 1 year old has had diarrhea and vomiting last night. I nursed her this am, but called the dr and they said not to nurse for the rest of the day and to give pedialyte. This seems strange to me - the no nursing part.

The doctor is wack. BM is more easily digested than pedialyte. Not to mention the nutritional and immunological benefits of BM. Give pedialyte if you want, but *I* wouldn't give it in place of BM. And I'd give gatorade over pedialyte, tastes better.

Nurse, nurse, nurse. If for some reason your lo refuses to nurse then offer pedialyte but otherwise I would bf as much as you can.

I agree with the nursing. And the gatorade, pedialyte does not taste good.

This is advice one might give to a formula feeding mother for her baby. This is not appropriate advice to give a breastfeeding mother. Nurse!

I nursed my baby 3 times, she also asked for chicken baby food. She at that fine with no problems. She HATES the pedialyte - it was like $6.00 at the grocery store and i have to throw it all away in 48 hours. What a crock! I hate my pedi's office. I want a new one.

Fire that DR and go nurse you baby as often as she wants and then some. BM is the best for your baby even more so when they are sick.

Keep nursing your baby. I am sorry to hear the advice you were given by your pedi. Sometimes doctors are misinformed, underinformed, or just don't know about breastfeeding and give the formula feeding recommendations.
I'd probably be upset too. I'd use this to either educate my pedi or find a new one. Do you have a PPO so you can call and find a new one or do you have limited selection to pick from? I am real sorry to hear and hope that you stick around here for some good help.

It's better for your baby to nurse during an illness. It is gentle on their little tummies. We nursed through some tough times with our little one and I think it made him get better faster.

Not only is BM gentle on sick little tummies, it contains substances that reduce GI inflammation. It actually will reduce vomiting and diarrhea.
When my six month old baby came down with a vicious stomach bug, he threw up a few times, cried a little, and nursed a lot. When it hit the rest of us a day later, we were so sick we wanted to crawl into a hole. We had horrible cramping and awful throwing up. But the BF baby was sleeping peacefully...
