does anyone know of some safe meds to take for a really bad cough and cold. I can't shake this and I think its starting to effect my supply. I'm already taking the plain robatussin ( gel cap form) and it helps a little but just for the cough.

Mucinex helped me a ton with a cough. Most OTCs are within the "safe" categories, but they can hurt your supply. I know you should stay away from meds with Pseudophederine or like meds because it can decrease your supply even with one dose.

I have been battling a cold myself and I asked about Mucinex. It makes your cough a little more productive, but helps so much! Also use saline for your nose and Tylenol or IBprophen for aches and pains or a fever. Hope you feel better soon.

Mucinex is just guaifenesin which is what you're taking (robitussin). A cough suppressant can be added (dextromethorphan--robitussin DM) if you wish. Really stay on top of your fluids--these meds aren't drying like pseudoephedrine is, but expectorants "pull" water from your system to help liquify your phlegm, making it easier to expell.

A neti pot can be very helpful in helping really irrigate your passages and ridding them of as much mucous as possible.

Use a humidifier. Try some Vick's. Drink a lot of herbal tea, like chamomile. All of these things are safer and just about as effective as OTC cold medicine.

Try a spoonful of honey to help calm the cough.
