My 9&1/2 week old has been seemingly sleeping like a log when out of nowhere he will just burst out in a full out wailing cry. He has done this about 6 or 7 times since he was brought home from the hospital. Nothing seems to be wrong with him, from what I can tell. All it takes is to pick him up and within a few seconds he calms down. At first I thought it might have been that I just slept through the first, quieter cries but it's also happened during the middle of the day while I'm wide awake and there's nothing leading up to it.
Have any of you experienced this or know what may be causing it? TIA!

How long has he slept before he wakes up? Does he want to nurse right away when he wakes up? Some babies are extra sleepy and will not wake up to eat. My son used to do this and he would wake up starving. Is there any signs of abdominal distress?

He could be hungry. He could be experiencing gas pains. Could be bunches of different things. When you pick him up, I assume that you put him in a different position than the one he was sleeping in- which could relieve gas pressure.
Watch him and see if you can figure it out. Does he fill a diaper and seem more comfortable? Does he want to nurse? Do you hear big old gas noises?
If it's gas, what color poop do you see?
