View Full Version : Could Owen have Strep?

Last week I noticed that whenever Owen would try to yell really loud he sounds like he is losing his voice. Then today he rejected dinner but accepted a popscicle in place. In hindsight he has been asking to eat ice whenever he sees me with it.

He has been eating normally, today he had toast and grapes for breakfast, didn't eat much around lunch time, but he fell asleep before lunch, and then when he woke up he asked for a peanut butter sandwich and ate it all. Dinner was only about 25 minutes after that but he rejected Mac And Cheese, which for him is NOT normal.

He still sounds raspy when he yells ( he is 2 and yells a lot) but he is sitting eating a popscicle and I gave him some tylenol.

He hasn't had a fever or acted like his ears hurt. I am trying to decide it this warrants a visit to the ped tomorrow or not? What do you think'? He has been a little whiney, and his eczema seems to be flared up a bit. Other than that and the raspy voice when he yells he seems fine...

What do you think?

I wouldn't take my son in for that. I would assume that he had a sore throat.

Sure but I wouldn't blink at a sore throat.

I wouldn't stress about it. If he had strep he would be miserable all the time. Probably running a fever as well. If he is still "trying" to yell then he can't be to miserable. Keep giving him the popsicles and ice.
Plus I doubt he would have eaten a peanut butter sandwiche.

How old is he? My ped told me that ds doesn't even have the receptors for strep yet.

Personally, with the info you provided, I wouldn't worry. I would assume annoying virus & until he seemed feverish or uncomfortable I wouldn't worry about a doc.

The only thing a dr would do (if it were necessary) is prescribe abx or admit him to the hosp.

But in a healthy child, no fever usually = no infection (so abx would be useless) and if he needed hospitalization, you'd probably know.

His body is capable of healing it on its own. Up his fluids & vit C if you can.
A humidifier might help.

Don't forget colds make foods taste different - so that might explain the change in eating preferences.

But ultimately trust your instincts. Take him in if you're worried.

I hope he feels better soon.

This is about where I stand.
Take him in if you are really concerned
-better yet, could you call? DD's ped has a hotline- I have called over the dumbest things just for advice on if they would rather me bring her in, or wait it out-and what to watch for in the meantime.

I have NEVER heard the thing about receptors. In fact when Rory was one or so her playdate friend got a BAD case of strep(and his mom still brought him over "wait") ,-and she ran a fever, so I called the ped and they had her come in for a quick swab test. (she didn't have strep ,tho whew)

Since he ate i wouldn't be too concerned. Also, considering he is 2 and "yells all the time" -he may just have strained his voice ,kwim?

Yeah you are probably right. I am calling the ped today anyways to get a refill on his ecxema cream, I think I will just mention it to the nurse then and see what she thinks.

He seems ok this morning, just a little stuffy. Im thinking he is coming down with a little cold, maybe because of the change in weather.
