No this isn't a dirty post lol. I've been hearing lately, that you shouldn't stuff the Turkey, or if you do, don't eat the dressing that you stuffed inside the turkey because it makes you sick. Frankly, I think we're all getting a wee bit too paranoid. I've been eating dressing that's been stuffed inside the turkey for as long as I've been able to eat solid foods lol, and I've never been sick, nor do I know of anyone who's ever gotten sick from that.

I've heard that too. Our family always stuffs the turkey. I'm guessing the only risk is if the food isn't cooked thoroughly?

It should be fine as long as you stuff the turkey right before you put it in the oven, right?
I dunno- I hope my mom makes me some of that turkey-free mushroom stuffing she made last year.

I never have. But not due to any fear. That's just not how we do it.

I put some in the bird and cook some out, that way guests can choose. Personally I think stuffing from the bird is the best, and if others don't want it then more for me :) I can't wait for Thursday........

the danger is in the fact that stuffing the turkey makes the turkey take longer to reach the safe germ killing temp poulty needs to reach. so just make sure the turkey reachs the proper internal temp. and properly store all leftovers and you should be good to go.
I never stuff the turkey because 1 it takes longer to cook, and 2 dh has a wheat allergy and stuffing is most times filled with wheat bread.

We don't stuff the turkey. I don't want to risk having 12 fight for 2 bathrooms.

No, I do not put the stuffing in the turkey.

We have done it both ways over the years.
the only time I ever got sick was last year when Granny made me my own "special" stuffing- no onions or celery.
I was the only one who ate it, and the only one to get sick.
It wasn't in the bird.
I agree with the others, has to do with the temperature. As long as you get it hot enough, it's fine. It's the same for anything that would be soaked in meat juice.

Who is Alton Brown. And stuffing is the main reason to have Thanksgiving.

The problem with the stuffing the turkey is that by the time the turkey has reached a desirable temperature, the stuffing is likely still not hot enough. So people either end up over cooking the turkey to ensure the stuffing is fully cooked, or they properly cook the turkey and undercook the stuffing.
I'd rather have nicely cooked turkey AND safe stuffing. I guess that's where dressing comes from?

We do not stuff the turkey, it ruins the stuffing. I don't think it tastes good when its been cooked in the turkey. I make it seperate

I did it last year, and it tasted pretty good, IMO. Traditionally, the turkey-preparer in our family doesn't do it that way, but I wanted to try it. I liked the flavor, but I probably won't do it again, just because it's extra work. I'm not making the big Thanksgiving turkey - I was given one, and I'm just cooking it for our family (today, actually), so I'm trying to do it as simply as possible.

I make a really good cornbread stuffing that turns out really well! Could your dh eat that?

it depends, some cornbread/cornmeal has wheat flour in it, some does not. I would love the recipe though, dh would love to be able to eat stuffing:)

I used to stuff the turkey and stopped when I needed way more stuffing than would fit inside the bird. I'd do some in and some out, but that was just a pain.
Now I do it in a casserole dish and baste it with some of the juices from the bird.

Nope. I love my mom's stuffing and when we're not with her on turkey day, I'm a Stove Top girl.

DH doesn't grill a whole bird anymore ~ just a couple of breasts, but I've always made my stuffing in a separate pan. My recipe is in the online cookbook here.

I'm doing a ham this year, so I guess I won't have to worry about it. I don't think you can stuff a ham...

Yeah, I probably should have picked turkey though, being pregnant, I'm supposed to lower my sodium intake. Oops.

It may not be too late.
I did have a thought about stuffing the Hamm. You coulda got a spiral cut ham and put the stuffing where it is cut. lol

Hamm can stuff herself without any help. And maybe you should ask her before stuffing her, she might have an opinion on the subject. ;)

I don't have a recipe lol! I just make a big pan of cornbread the day before and let it get stale. Cube it, mix it with onion and celery cooked in butter, toss in an egg or two, some salt, pepper and sage I think (or whatever floats your boat). I'm pretty sure that's about all I do, and it turns out really well :)

This is a bit of a hijack, but it's actually not recommended to lower your sodium intake during pregnancy unless you have certain health problems (see link (http://nutrition.birthingnaturally.net/nut101/salt.html)).
Congrats on your pregnancy!
