View Full Version : Is there such a thing as gaining weight too fast in a bf baby?

DS1 was a chunker so maybe I just make them that way.
However, we went to the ped today and DS2 has gained about 20 ounces in just under two weeks. That's not even including any amount that he lost after birth before my milk came in. 20 ounces on top of his birth weight.
He was 8lbs 2 ounces when he was born and is now 9lbs 6 ounces. According to Kellymom bf infants generally gain no more than 8 ounces in a week and it would seem that DS2 is gaining about 10 ounces.
Should I be concerned at all?

I wouldn't be concerned. Women who have really plentiful supplies have babies who gain quickly. It all evens out as the baby gets closer to a year to two years.

I don't think so, I grow chunky monkeys, too. All three of my kiddos have gained 3+ pounds in the first month of life.

Got any new pics to share? DD is now almost 16 months old...the days of her being 2 weeks old is a long memory back. lol

No worries mama! Some babies grow fast. My DS1 was up to about 20 pounds by 6 months and now at 3 he is about 30 pounds! He gained a lot really fast and then dropped weight gain significantly once getting mobile. My new one has gained fast also, he's over 12 pounds and not even 2 months yet. But he had a gassy period earlier on and nursed a lot to calm his upset tummy.
I love chunky monkeys!

They tend to gain ALOT in the first month. My DD was 7lb 9oz at birth, 7lbs even when we left the hospital and 10lb 6oz at her 1 month check up

I would love to hear any tips that you moms may have for me. I have just transitioned to exclusively breastfeeding my 8 week old and his weight gain is slower than I want it to be. We have had to overcome quite a few issues starting with him being in the NICU for 10 days due to respiratory problems immediately after birth.
Any suggestions would be so appreciated.

DD gained between 8 and 16 oz a week for about 2 months. Then all of a sudden it dropped to 5-8 oz a week. I wouldn't be concerned as long as he's a happy camper and doing well nursing!

my sil's baby was gaining at about the same rate, the pedi's solution was to not bf her so often. I told her that if you were hungry, would you ever not feed yourself just because the numbers are different
